Utility Systems Repairer-Operator

The National Park Service is seeking a Utility Systems Repairer-Operator for the Facilities Management Division at Shenandoah National Park. The primary responsibility of this role is to serve as the lead operator for the Loft Mountain Wastewater Treatment Plant, ensuring regulatory compliance and performing various water and wastewater treatment duties.

Responsibilities

Ensure regulatory compliance of the systems to the standards set forth by Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Public Health, Virginia Department of Health and EPA
You must possess and maintain a current Virginia Water Works Class 6 License or higher. You must include a copy of your license as part of your application package
You must possess and maintain a current Virginia Wastewater Class 4 License or higher. You must include a copy of your license as part of your application package
Collects samples to determine degree of treatment required/achieved
Make adjustments and repairs to valves, controls, pumps, blowers, etc
Follow instructions to make adjustments throughout the wastewater processes to achieve a maximum efficiency of treatment within established guidelines
Knowledge to vary the treatment processes in accordance with daily testing results to achieve permit requirements
Records water chlorine readings, monitors turbidity, etc
Perform preventative, recurring and minor corrective maintenance on pumps and other mechanical equipment
Install. modify, and/or /repair supply and demand side water lines, water closets, disinfection pump units, relays, etc
Maintain well head protection plans, sampling plans, quality assurance plans, microbiological analysis, and general records and data
Read and comprehend technical books, articles, periodicals, regulatory permits and instructions for water and wastewater treatment
Use work processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs to complete reports and electronic forms
Operates backhoes, forklift, mowers, weed whackers, etc. to maintain grounds, etc
Position is essential/emergency and may be required to report for duty during emergency operations

Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program
Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT)
Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc
Knowledge of materials
Technical practices
Use of measuring instruments
Perform the full range of water and wastewater treatment duties in compliance with state and federal regulations
