Responsibilities
Receive referrals from social workers, case managers, authorization teams, and other departments, as well as assist walk-in patients seeking insurance or financial assistance
Work with uninsured patients to identify appropriate coverage options, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Hospital Charity Care programs
Assist patients with completing and submitting applications through state portals (e.g., Medicaid), and routinely check application status
Manage daily patient volume across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department settings
Serve as a subject matter expert on Medicaid-related processes and requirements
Respond professionally to emails, phone calls, and in-person inquiries from patients and internal departments, including social work, case management, and transplant teams
Communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats with diverse patient populations and hospital staff
Maintain accurate documentation of patient interactions, applications, and follow-up activities within the system
Qualification
Required
Strong working knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid programs
Experience working within the EPIC electronic health record system
Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage in-person, phone, and written interactions professionally
Ability to manage varying patient volumes and multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment
Preferred
2 or more years of Patient Financial Counselor experience in a hospital setting
