Controller - path to CFO
firstPRO, Inc is a rapidly growing company in Milford seeking a Controller to take on a leadership role with the potential for advancement to CFO. The role involves financial leadership, team development, and strategic planning while ensuring compliance and optimizing financial operations.
Responsibilities
Lead, coach, and develop the accounting and administrative team
Set expectations, run regular team meetings, and drive accountability
Act as a business partner first—balancing financial discipline with operational realities
Build strong, trust-based relationships across the organization
Own the month-end and year-end close processes
Oversee general ledger activity, AP, AR, payroll, fixed assets, and bank reconciliations
Ensure invoices are reviewed, approved, and properly coded
Maintain accuracy, consistency, and timeliness across all financial records
Lead annual budgeting and ongoing forecasting efforts
Provide forward-looking financial insight to support growth initiatives
Identify cost-saving opportunities and operational efficiencies
Protect company assets while improving financial visibility and discipline
Deliver clear, accurate financial statements and management reports
Prepare balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports, and ad hoc analysis
Support external accountants with tax filings and financial reporting
Leverage QuickBooks Online and ERP tools to enhance reporting and scalability
Actively manage cash inflows and outflows to maintain liquidity
Oversee receivables, collections, credit limits, and vendor payment terms
Optimize working capital and reduce unnecessary debt exposure
Manage banking relationships and negotiate vendor pricing and terms
Design and enforce internal controls and company accounting policies
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax and labor regulations
Serve as the primary point of contact for audits and financial reviews
Coordinate with banks, lenders, CPAs, insurance providers, and advisors
Qualification
Required
5+ years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience
CPA license
Strong technical skills, including experience with QuickBooks Online
Strong command of GAAP, general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and reporting
Proven ability to lead people, improve processes, and drive results
Strategic mindset with a willingness to stay hands-on
High integrity, sound judgment, and excellent communication skills
