Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer

Southwest Transplant Alliance is seeking a Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer to lead and direct the overall operations of the Gift of Life enterprise. The COO will oversee operational activities, ensure compliance with regulations, and enhance organizational performance while collaborating with the Executive Leadership Team to achieve strategic goals.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the oversight and management of all operational activities, including organ operations, tissue operations, laboratory services, and associated logistics and recovery support functions
Develop and implement operational strategies to improve efficiency and effectiveness in operational processes and monitor key performance indicators and operational metrics to drive continuous improvement
Achieve measurable progress in moving the organization toward its long-term goal of increasing organ donation rates and organ transplant rates
Demonstrate enterprise-wide leadership by aligning operational priorities with organizational strategy, balancing short- and long-term objectives, and making data-informed decisions that optimize outcomes across the organization
Establish a performance management framework that leverages dashboards, trend analysis, and benchmarking to drive accountability, inform strategic decisions, and improve outcomes across the organization
Participate in the development of the strategic direction and goals of the organization to provide for its continuity, stabilization, growth, and innovation in fulfillment of its mission
Identify and present strategic opportunities for consideration, suggest appropriate courses of action, provide leadership to and oversee the efforts of task forces and committees dealing with strategic issues, keep the President & Chief Executive Officer informed of progress against strategic initiatives
As a member of the Executive Leadership Team and at the direction of the President & Chief Executive Officer, participate in relevant meetings of the organization’s Board of Directors to support its oversight of the organization and the fulfillment of its fiduciary responsibilities to the organization
Lead and manage organizational change initiatives, including operational transformation, process redesign, and adoption of new technologies, ensuring staff engagement and sustained performance improvement
In partnership with the Executive Leadership Team, ensure that operations are executed in a manner that is consistent with all federal, state, and local regulations related to organ procurement and transplantation, including OPTN Policies, CMS Conditions for Coverage of Organ Procurement Organizations (both Outcome Requirements and Process Performance Measures), and the Texas Revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, and with the organization’s Corporate Code of Conduct
Proactively identify operational, regulatory, and reputational risks; develop mitigation strategies; and lead effective response to critical incidents and organizational crises
Lead, mentor, and develop operational staff to foster a collaborative and high-performance culture
Ensure staff are provided appropriate training and development programs to enhance staff skills and knowledge
Foster teamwork and professional growth for team members, encouraging creativity, flexibility, and accountability
Model ethical leadership and foster an inclusive, values-driven culture that supports equity, transparency, and trust across the organization and with external partners
Effectively communicate with team members, direct reports, staff, and stakeholders to ensure an organizational culture of trust, collaboration, safety, transparency, and accountability
Build a strong leadership pipeline through succession planning, talent assessment, and development of future leaders to ensure organizational continuity and resilience
In conjunction with other members of the Executive Leadership Team, build and maintain effective relationships with hospital partners, transplant centers, and community organizations to support the operations of the organization in fulfillment of its mission
Develop new relationships with potential business partners to maximize opportunities for organ procurement, transplant, and research
Represent the organization through association membership and leadership roles and by attending conferences, meetings, and public forums
Collaborate with others in the procurement field to drive organizational outcomes and to promote continuous improvement of the broader organ procurement and transplantation network
Monitor external trends, policy developments, and industry best practices and represents the organization in advocacy efforts to advance the organ procurement transplantation system
Assist with the development of the organization’s annual budget, overseeing the preparation and management of the annual budgets for all relevant departments to ensure financial sustainability and accountability
Identify and engage with vendors and suppliers to support an effective and efficient operation, negotiating business terms and financial agreements with vendors and suppliers and participating in the contracting process in partnership with the organization’s General Counsel

Required

Minimum of 10 years of experience in healthcare operations in a leadership role is required
Strong working knowledge of organ procurement and transplantation processes and regulations, including federal and state regulations and industry standards regarding organ procurement is required
Proven track record of strategic planning, operational management, cross-functional integration, and financial performance evaluation leveraging performance metrics, KPIs, and quantitative analysis to monitor progress, optimize operations, and achieve organizational goals is required
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills is required
Current Driver's License is required and maintained with an acceptable driving record as defined by STA policy

Preferred

Master's in business administration, hospital administration, or related healthcare field is preferred. A combination of alternative education and executive or senior experience may be considered in lieu of the formal education requirements
