Payroll Tax Analyst

They are seeking a Payroll Tax Analyst responsible for the accurate execution, reconciliation, and compliance of payroll tax activities across various jurisdictions, while acting as a subject matter expert in payroll taxation.

Responsibilities
Monitor and validate payroll tax calculations for income tax, FICA, FUTA, SUTA, and local taxes
Validate payroll tax filings and payments for federal, state, and local jurisdictions, including income taxes, FICA, FUTA, and SUTA
Review, reconcile, and submit quarterly and annual payroll tax returns (Forms 941, 940, W-2, W-3, and state equivalents)
Support year-end payroll tax activities, including W-2 reconciliation, balancing, and corrections
Process payroll tax adjustments, amendments, and prior-period corrections
Perform detailed payroll tax reconciliations between payroll system reports, GL, and tax vendor filings
Identify root causes of discrepancies and independently research, resolve, and document variances
Prepare and maintain reconciliations with clear audit trails
Serve as the primary owner of payroll tax notices, including researching, drafting responses, and coordinating corrections with vendors and payroll processors
Act as point of contact with payroll tax agencies
Support internal and external audits by providing documentation, explanations, and reconciliations
Partner with payroll tax vendor to resolve tax discrepancies, filing issues, and validate amendments and adjustments
Ensure timely payments and filings
Collaborate with Payroll Systems and HRIS teams on tax and new entity setups
Review and validate tax configurations during implementations, conversions or system updates
Identify payroll tax risks and recommend process improvements
Develop and maintain tax procedures, controls and documentation
Provide guidance to Payroll and HR teams on tax-related questions and best practices
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, HR, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of 5 years of progressive payroll experience, including 2+ years of payroll tax experience in a multistate organization
Strong understanding of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations, wage and hour laws, tax filings, reconciliations and amendments
Advanced Excel and reporting skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, complex formulas)
Experience working with payroll tax vendors and jurisdictions
Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
Preferred
FPC or CPP certification preferred
Hands-on experience with Oracle Cloud payroll or ADP preferred
