Director of Communications
SoTalent is seeking a Director of Communications who can shape strategy, oversee cross-functional execution, and serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership. This role involves guiding a high-performing team, managing crisis communication efforts, and ensuring consistent organizational messaging aligned with strategic priorities.
Responsibilities
Partner with senior executives to build, execute, and evaluate an annual communications strategy targeted to key audiences
Ensure organizational communications consistently reflect strategic goals and priorities
Lead media relations efforts to position the organization as a thought leader within its field
Use research and insights to elevate the visibility of major organizational programs and initiatives
Maintain consistent brand identity and messaging across all channels
Provide editorial oversight and final approval for public-facing communications
Oversee the development and distribution of print and digital assets, including newsletters, reports, videos, and more
Manage communications budgets and ensure effective resource allocation
Collaborate with internal departments to identify communication needs and deliver strategic solutions
Oversee websites, social media platforms, and digital content to ensure alignment with brand standards
Ensure SEO, ADA/WCAG accessibility, and modern UX/UI best practices across all digital assets
Develop audience personas and user journeys to guide tailored communication strategies
Lead and mentor the communications team across PR, social media, content, design, editorial, and marketing functions
Manage email marketing systems, ensuring compliance with GDPR and other regulations
Coordinate with external vendors and agencies where needed
Serve as staff liaison to communications-related committees
Drive content strategies designed to increase audience engagement, reach, and measurable impact
Track analytics and engagement data to optimize communication channels and content performance
Collaborate with development and fundraising teams on integrated campaigns aligned with brand and messaging
Expand reach of educational materials through video, podcasts, print, and online formats
Oversee signature engagement initiatives and support community-focused programs
Perform additional duties as needed
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience
At least 15 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, or related fields
Minimum 10 years of experience leading and managing teams
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders
Strong writing and editing skills, including mastery of AP style
Proven ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously and deliver high‑quality outcomes
Self‑motivated, strategic, and entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for building new initiatives
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with experience using Adobe Creative Suite, CMS platforms, and marketing automation tools
Strong understanding of SEO, accessibility standards, UX/UI principles, Google Analytics, and Google Tag Manager
Ability to plan, organize, and execute communication strategies and large‑scale projects
Strong leadership, team management, decision‑making, and problem‑solving abilities
Preferred
Experience in an association or nonprofit environment is a plus
