Software Engineer I

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is NASA’s science operations center for missions including the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. They are seeking a Software Engineer I to support the development and enhancement of scientific data pipelines and analysis tools for NASA’s flagship missions, primarily focusing on data visualization.

Responsibilities

Designing, developing, testing, and deploying software to support astronomers in analyzing astronomical data
Collaborating closely with STScI’s technical and scientific staff
Maintaining and extending existing software packages, as well as developing new ones
Engaging with the open‑source community through platforms such as GitHub and contributing to scientific and technical papers and conference presentations
Providing technical and scientific development for Python notebooks that focus on scientific use cases

Required

Intermediate Python experience: experience with a compiled language such as C or C++ is a plus
You have worked with astronomical data and understand user needs from a pipeline and data analysis perspective. Experience with HST and JWST data is a plus
Python experience in multiprocessing, multithreading, or optimizing performance of Python code for large datasets is a plus
You are comfortable with writing unit tests and with test-driven development
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Physics, Astronomy, Software Engineering or a comparable degree, with 2+ years of experience as a software engineer

Preferred

Education or professional background in astronomy, or software development in a research environment, is helpful
