CDOC General Maintenance Supervisor CSTS I (Limon)

Responsibilities
Ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates
Training and overseeing an inmate work crew in general building trades, grounds maintenance, and janitorial operations
Ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant completion of assigned tasks
Maintains safety and security of facility and work sites
Trains and guides inmates in the proper use of controlled items, tools, equipment and chemicals
Enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches and monitoring workplace environment and inmate behavior
Initiates verbal reprimands when warranted
Physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or 'use of force' techniques
Monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to policy
Performs inmate counts and transportation
Responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to policy
Writes and submits required reporting
Ensures the safe, efficient, compliant and cost effective operations of building and grounds construction, janitorial operations, repair or maintenance
Responsible for the maintenance of facility buildings to include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, remodeling and repairs
Provides instruction and training to inmates in modifying and remodeling of prison buildings
Provides training in the design, installation and repair & maintenance of all facility structures
Trains inmate workers in the proper use, care and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals and machinery
Responsible for the maintenance of facility grounds to include design, installation and daily maintenance and repair of irrigation pumps, sprinkler heads and lines, pipelines, valves, supply ditches and gates
Provides instruction and training to inmates in all aspects of grounds maintenance
Coordinates with other projects, supervisors and managers in order to facilitate the most economical use of resources
Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and materials for daily and emergent needs
Monitors inventory levels and implements procedures for efficient use and elimination of theft, waste, and loss
Provides supervision of assigned inmate work crew
Promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission and vision
Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures
Stresses safe construction practices
Exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior
Participates in inmate hiring process
Tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay
Creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances
Inspects work and performs inmate evaluations
Reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry
May be required to supervise additional inmate crews in the absence of other supervisors
Subject to facility call back, working additional hours or shifts to maintain security and operations
Working outside during inclement weather
Working in close proximity to industrial equipment and in high, tight, and confined spaces
Qualification
Required
Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance
Building/Equipment Maintenance - includes planning, estimating, and performing a variety of 'hands on' trades such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, machinery/equipment repair, and/or electrical on residential, commercial, or agricultural structures
Grounds Maintenance - includes planning, installation, and/or maintenance of automated irrigation systems, comprehensive lawn care, and a variety of other exterior work such as concrete work, asphalt patching, fence building, and/or snow removal
A minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with correctional experience
Correctional Experience - must be security related duties where primary responsibilities included detaining, controlling movement and escorting inmates in a prison facility; conducting counts and searches while monitoring inmate assignments and movement throughout the day
Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or degree through an accredited, non-correspondence vocational or trade school that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those learned through the required experience may substitute for experience on a year for year basis

Ability to read blueprints, conduct relevant research, create material and labor list with cost estimate and implement projects from start to finish, while coordinating with other trades and shops to use resources efficiently
Willingness and ability to effectively communicate while working with inmates individually and in groups, providing verbal and/or written instructions, monitoring project progress and compliance, in a highly regulated environment with firm deadlines and mandatory reporting and record-keeping regulations
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively cooperate with other staff and inmates and inspire teamwork
Willingness and ability to train, coach and mentor inmate workers in order to prepare them for community reentry
Ability to effectively respond to emergency situations (such as fights, fires, medical emergencies and escapes)
Ability to climb ladders and stairs, work in high, tight and confined spaces; outside during inclement weather and in close proximity to industrial equipment
Self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations
Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift
Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high-stakes interaction
Ability to read and comprehend the English language
Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing
Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind
Must be 21 years of age
Possess a valid driver's license
Possess a high school diploma or GED
Have NO felony convictions
Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States to be appointed to this position
Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training
Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations
Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner
Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders
Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments
Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
Willing and able to travel
Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule
TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire
Successful completion of a background investigation is required
Preferred
Related Building/Equipment or Grounds Maintenance employment experience within the last 5 years
Project Management employment experience
Supervisory Experience
License or Certification in a related field such as; electrical, water, plumbing, HVAC, vehicle maintenance, etc
