Controls Engineer - for Process Equipment Manufacturer
Decimal Engineered Systems is a leading U.S.-based manufacturer of advanced extraction and post-processing equipment for the cannabis and hemp industries. They are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to design, program, implement, and support sophisticated control systems for automated extraction and processing equipment.

Responsibilities
Design and develop control systems for automated extraction, distillation, and processing equipment using PLC, HMI, and SCADA platforms
Develop ladder logic, structured text, and function block programs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar)
Design HMI/SCADA interfaces for operator control and process visualization
Implement safety interlocks, emergency shutdown systems, and process safety logic for hazardous-location equipment
Specify instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow, level, and analytical sensors
Implement advanced process control strategies for temperature, pressure, flow, and level control
Configure PID loops, sequencing logic, and batch automation routines
Integrate motors, VFDs, solenoid valves, pneumatic actuators, and field devices
Develop automated startup, shutdown, and emergency response sequences
Optimize control algorithms for efficiency, consistency, and safety
Create electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN
Design control panels and enclosures compliant with UL508A, NFPA 70 (NEC), and Class I Div 1/2 requirements
Design electrical distribution, MCCs, and power systems
Design and implement industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, analog/digital I/O)
Build and wire control panels as needed
Lead commissioning and startup activities at customer facilities
Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
Troubleshoot control system issues during installation and production
Provide technical support to customers, field service teams, and internal staff
Train operators on system operation and basic troubleshooting
Maintain control system documentation including functional specs, P&IDs, BOMs, schematics, panel layouts, and I/O lists
Develop SOPs and control system manuals
Maintain version control for PLC, HMI, and electrical documentation
Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and internal QMS requirements
Analyze system performance and implement control improvements
Standardize control architectures and components where possible
Mentor junior engineers and technicians
Collaborate with R&D on next-generation product development
Manage control-related parts inventory and conduct periodic audits
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
5+ years of hands-on industrial controls engineering experience
Proven PLC programming and HMI/SCADA development experience
Electrical design experience using AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN
Strong customer service and communication skills
Expert-level PLC programming (ladder logic, structured text, function block)
HMI development and process visualization design
Strong understanding of industrial instrumentation and sensors
PID control theory and advanced process control
Industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, Profinet, DeviceNet)
Ability to read and create P&IDs, schematics, loop diagrams
Motor controls, VFDs, servo systems, and motion control
Knowledge of NEC Article 500/505 and hazardous location classifications
Process automation in chemical, extraction, or pharmaceutical manufacturing
Safety systems and emergency shutdown logic
ASME pressure vessel codes and industrial safety standards
Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities
Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and team-focused
Willingness to travel domestically and occasionally internationally (~10%)
Preferred
ISA CCST or CAP certification
Robotics programming and integration experience
Industrial cybersecurity and network design knowledge
Hydraulic and pneumatic control systems experience
Familiarity with machine safety standards (ANSI/RIA R15.06, ISO 13849)
Experience in regulated industries (pharma, food & beverage, cannabis)
UL508A panel shop experience
Knowledge of GMP and quality systems
Batch processing and recipe-based control systems (preferred)
Cannabis/hemp extraction experience is a plus, not required
