Senior HITL Test Engineer
DisruptXtalent is an ambitious Seattle-based space startup redefining rapid orbital delivery, and they are seeking a Senior HITL Test Engineer to own the validation of their next-generation spacecraft platform. The role involves architecting HIL/HITL environments, constructing test frameworks, and solving complex firmware issues to ensure software reliability and mission success.
Staffing & Recruiting
Responsibilities
Architect the HIL/HITL Environment: Design, build, and expand high-fidelity Hardware-in-the-Loop environments to support edge cases, fault injection, and end-to-end mission simulations
Construct Test Frameworks: Partner with Avionics to build out automated regression frameworks and CI/CD pipelines that allow for rapid iteration without compromising safety
Influence System Architecture: Review and influence software architecture, including state machines and Interface Control Documents (ICDs), to bake reliability into the flight-ready stack from day one
Bridge the Gap: Own the software and firmware integration from initial power-on to flight-ready status, ensuring all subsystems are synchronized
Solve Deep-System Issues: Debug complex firmware issues across avionics and payloads, driving root-cause resolution with internal teams and external vendors
Qualification
Required
5–7+ Years of Mission-Critical Experience: A proven track record developing or testing embedded systems for Space, Aerospace, or Robotics
HITL Mastery: Significant 'hands-on-hardware' experience with embedded bring-up and the construction of complex test environments
Code Proficiency: Expert-level proficiency in C/C++ for embedded development and Python for sophisticated test automation
Startup DNA: A high-autonomy mindset with the ability to take full ownership of the validation domain
Preferred
Experience with spacecraft subsystems like ADCS, Power, or Avionics
Familiarity with RTOS (FreeRTOS), embedded Linux, or flight software frameworks like cFS
Knowledge of aerospace protocols: CAN, UART, and Ethernet
Strong opinions on building world-class FDIR (Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery) systems
