Responsibilities
Perform project level inventory audits, document project space allocation and planning discussions, and communicate using reports, slides and dashboards
Report on project costs/stock levels during weekly lab meetings with PI
Explore domestic and international storage and logistics opportunities, and facilitate day-to-day project-level activities of the Lagrangian Drifter Laboratory
Generate reports on inventory used, cost, labor time and implied cost per project
Prepare project documents for end-users, fabrication supply audits, and reconcile records in support of scientific research equipment fabrications
Input project metadata
Communicates errors, issues and urgent statuses directly to senior engineering staff or PI
Participates in deployment opportunity identification and maintains communication with volunteer deployment parties to identify opportunities and prepare deployment opportunity documents for PI review
Assist with general lab maintenance, ensuring space is clean, safe and orderly
Perform proper storage and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials according to University Policy
Keep informed of updates on safety policy and procedures and assist with ensuring Environmental Health and Safety compliance
Communicate, coordinate and discuss weekly project schedules with senior engineering staff, liaise with technical/fabrication staff, and report directly to the senior engineering staff and to the PI
Qualification
Required
Graduation from a high school or GED and three years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in physical science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of duties assigned to the position
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with scientific, technical, and administrative personnel
Proven ability to work in a team environment, excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work with a diverse group of people, to communicate clearly/effectively, and to demonstrate tact and diplomacy
Ability to maintain the organization of laboratory supplies, equipment tools, and documentation in support of oceanographic research
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
Ability to read, interpret and apply protocols for transportation of oceanographic research equipment to the port of call
Ability to work in a research laboratory environment in adherence with established protocols
Ability to accurately maintain lab records with strict attention to detail
Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently. Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Ability to develop, follow, and trouble-shoot established lab protocols and lab procedures with direction from senior staff
Willingness to learn new skills
Ability to communicate weekly work schedule with the technical/fabrication staff, Sr. Engineer and PI
Experience working in activities adjacent to the design, fabrication and testing of research equipment
Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
Must be willing and able to travel to various locations (local/national/international) for field-based work
Must be willing to work near hazardous materials, such as Lithium Batteries. May be required to work near curing epoxy and urethane
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required
Must have a valid passport for international travel
Must be able to obtain certification to operate a Fork lift
Must have access to reliable transportation
