Associate Technician / Mechanical Engineer

Engineering Innovation, Inc. is a premier provider of postal automation based in Lafayette, Indiana. They are seeking an Associate Technician / Mechanical Engineer to assist with the design, testing, and documentation of postal automation equipment while gaining hands-on engineering experience.

Responsibilities

Assisting engineers with research, concept development, and early design work
Performing component qualification, testing, and integration
Building and testing prototypes
Participating in compliance and safety testing
Creating instructional manuals, guides, test plans, and reports
Developing and maintaining engineering drawings and models
Assembling mechanical components, mechanisms, and fixtures
Operating basic shop tools (drill press, saws, grinders, etc.)
Using mechanical measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges, torque tools)
Conducting root‑cause analysis for mechanical failures
Building custom mechanical test fixtures
Supporting machine builds and assembly processes
Supporting documentation control processes
Assisting production teams with mechanical troubleshooting, testing, and process improvements

Required

U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents
Ability to work a minimum of 20 hours/week during the Spring/Fall Semesters (Monday – Friday, no nights or weekends)
Ability to work a minimum of 32 hours/week during the Summer (Monday – Friday, no nights or weekends)
Basic mechanical knowledge
Excellent problem-solving skills
Strong Communication skills
Strong analytical skills
Attention to detail

Preferred

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio)
3D CAD programs (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, etc.)
Experience with mechanical measurement tools (calipers, dial indicators, torque wrenches)
Basic machining, fabrication, or hands-on mechanical experience
Understanding of assembly methods, tolerances, or materials
Exposure to FEA or simulation tools (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS)
