Smolt Trap Technician - Scientific Technician 2 - Non-Permanent - Four Openings - 2026-00993
NEOGOV is seeking a Smolt Trap Technician to join the Department of Fish and Wildlife. This role involves hands-on fieldwork, conducting daily trap checks, sampling juvenile fish, and applying various marking and tagging techniques to support fisheries research and management efforts.

Responsibilities
Assist with the installation, removal, operation, and maintenance of juvenile fish traps
Check trap(s) daily, enumerating, and sub-sampling juvenile fish catch
Collect and record biological and environmental data assigned by supervisor
Use various marking and tagging techniques such as coded wire tags (CWTs), PIT tags, fin clips, VIE, opercule punch, and bismark brown
Perform efficiency trials
Enter and error check data into agency database(s) and paper forms
Perform trap maintenance as directed
Organize and maintain all trap related gear, sampling equipment and data forms
Drive agency vehicles to and from work sites as directed – may include off-road conditions and trailering
Qualification
Required
Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science
Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1
Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science
Two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist
Valid Driver's License
Preferred
One (1) year or more experience identifying juvenile salmonids by species and other incidental catch
One (1) year or more experience operating, maintaining, and repairing fish traps
One (1) year or more experience in basic construction, using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and small engine machinery including generators & pumps
One (1) year or more experience entering data into computer files and spreadsheets (such as Microsoft Excel, Access)
One (1) year or more experience coordinating and communicating with co-workers and other fisheries professionals
One (1) year or more experience in salmon life history and proper fish-handling techniques
One (1) year or more experience in juvenile salmon trapping techniques
One (1) year or more experience in fish marking and tagging protocols
One (1) year or more experience in organizational skills
