Codes Compliance Inspector II

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Codes Compliance Inspector II to inspect existing structures for compliance with minimum building maintenance standards. The role involves enforcing various city codes, investigating complaints, and coordinating with other city departments and public service agencies.

Responsibilities

Canvasses for City building maintenance, zoning, inoperable motor vehicle, weed and trash, graffiti and other City Code violations
Receives, evaluates, investigates complaints and issues orders and/or citations for building maintenance, zoning, inoperable motor vehicle, weed and trash, graffiti and other City Code violations
Inspects existing buildings to bring into compliance with regulations, especially Part III of the Uniform Statewide Building Code
Issues Certificates of Compliance through the Rental Inspection Program
Notifies violators of code violations by issuing warnings, stop work orders or orders for repairs or abatement to bring into compliance with regulations, especially the Uniform Statewide Building Code and City Zoning Code
Summonses violators and testifies in court. Coordinates with the Commonwealth Attorney
Makes recommendations and consults with Building Maintenance Code Official and Codes Compliance Coordinator with regard to pulling of power, board-ups, demolitions and habitability of structures
Investigates, coordinates, receives and makes referrals to Social Services, Police, Fire-EMS, Public Works, the State Health Department and E-911
Works closely with neighborhood organizations, community development corporations, the Redevelopment and Housing Authority and other agencies and city departments regarding code enforcement issues
Meets with property owners, property managers, contractors and tenants to resolve problems
Issues maintenance orders, citations, and prepares reports related to building, zoning and nuisance code violations

Required

High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
Three to five years related experience or training in building construction or appraisal of residential and complex commercial/industrial properties
Equivalent combination of education and experience
Valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
Virginia Certification as a Building Maintenance Inspector issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development
National certification as Zoning Inspector from the International Code Council or certification as a Zoning Official by the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials

Retirement: Employees contribute 5% of salary and choose between participating in a traditional defined benefit plan or a hybrid program.
Defined Benefit Pension Plan: Normal retirement after 55th birthday.
Hybrid Program: Provides the characteristics of the traditional pension plan with that of a deferred compensation plan.
Retirement Health Savings Plan: All employees contribute 1% of salary to a 401(h) health savings account.
Deferred Compensation: Employees may voluntarily contribute salary deferred dollars into a City Sponsored 457 Plan.
Flexible Spending Account: Allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars from their pay checks to pay for child care and/or medical and dental expenses not covered by the City's health care or dental plans.
