Fractional Legal Counsel
Ekster® is a company focused on creating innovative gear for life on the go. They are seeking a proactive Fractional Legal Counsel to establish their Legal department, manage intellectual property, and provide legal guidance in a fast-paced e-commerce environment.

Responsibilities
Set up, structure, and maintain a legal info space as the single source of truth for all legal documentation
Collect, review, and organize existing legal documents (e.g. IP registrations, contracts, corporate records, policies)
Identify missing, outdated, or incomplete documentation and create or update what is needed
Ensure the legal info space is kept accurate, current, and audit-ready over time
Own and drive IP enforcement strategies, including trademarks, designs, and copyrights
Manage and maintain the global IP portfolio, including filings, renewals, and record-keeping
Lead cease-and-desist processes and manage brand infringement cases end-to-end
Monitor online platforms, marketplaces, websites, and social media for IP violations
Build and manage infringement cases, including evidence gathering and sample orders
Coordinate takedowns and enforcement actions with brand protection partners and platforms
Interpret data and reports to identify trends, risks, and strategic enforcement priorities
Handle ad-hoc legal matters such as IP filings, oppositions, infringements, and other legal procedures as they arise
Advise internal teams on legal risks, trade-offs, and practical solutions
Prepare legal documentation, evidence, and case files to support enforcement or other legal actions
Liaise with external counsel when needed to resolve complex or country-specific matters
A well-structured, complete, and continuously maintained legal info space
Clear visibility into the company’s legal and IP position, with gaps identified and addressed
Successful takedowns and resolution of copycat and infringement cases
An up-to-date and well-managed IP portfolio
Well-documented, legally sound infringement dossiers ready for enforcement or escalation
Clear, actionable legal guidance that enables business teams to operate safely and efficiently
Qualification
Required
Strong experience with IP law, brand protection, and anti-counterfeiting
Hands-on experience with US legal frameworks and enforcement practices
Experience setting up or professionalizing legal operations or documentation from scratch
Experience working in fast-scaling, product-driven e-commerce companies
Fluent in English, spoken and written
Precise, analytical, and comfortable handling multiple matters simultaneously
Combine strategic thinking with hands-on execution
Confident working with brand protection partners and external counsel
Strong moral compass and a clear instinct for what is fair and defensible
Proactively spot risks—and fix them before they grow
Available on a freelance and flexible basis (approx. 1 day per week, with the ability to temporarily increase availability on an ad-hoc basis)
Preferred
Fluency in Dutch is a plus
