Technical Writing Specialist/Senior Technical Writing/Editing Specialist (12377, Grade 18/22)

Montgomery Parks is seeking a Senior Technical Writer/Editor to support the Planning Board. This role involves preparing official minutes and transcripts of meetings, maintaining records, and providing administrative support to Planning Board members.

Responsibilities

Prepare official minutes, actions and, as necessary, verbatim transcripts of Prince George’s Planning Board regular meetings and executive sessions often under tight deadlines
Coordinate Planning Board meeting preparation of agendas and supporting materials for Planning Board Members
Provide assistance, as necessary, to members of the general public who wish to speak at a meeting by explaining Board procedures and regulations
Maintain Commission records related to calendars, agendas, minutes, and resolutions
Research files and archives and organizes and writes summaries of information in response to requests from members of the County Council, the public and staff
Provide administrative assistance to Planning Board members
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Perform other duties as assigned
Serve as liaison to the Planning Board Administrator and assumes certain responsibilities at meetings in the absence of the Planning Board Administrator
Involved in the development of policies and procedures including style and format of materials produced by Technical Writer/Editors, filing systems, and procedures for responding to inquiries and requests from staff and the general public
Review and evaluates work methods and technology that can improve efficiency and effectiveness of Technical Writers/Editors performance
May lead a group of Technical Writing Specialists. Plans, prioritizes and coordinates writing and editing work
Inform of items that may be useful from the review of Commission/management literature and relevant policies or issues
Train new staff on meeting policies and procedures
As necessary, prepares and updates general briefing information for new Commissioners
May serve as working leader with additional writing and administrative duties
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

High School diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED)
Four (4) years of experience in a position that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above and two (2) years of experience as a Technical Writing Specialist
Graduation from high school or GED supplemented by college-level courses in English; and four years of experience in a position that provided knowledge, skills and abilities mentioned above; OR equivalent combination of education and experience
Graduation from high school or GED supplemented by college-level courses in English; and four years of experience in a position that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above and two years experience as a Technical Writer/Editor; OR equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of English composition, style, and usage
Knowledge of M-NCPPC policies and procedures, the Board's Rules of Procedure, County laws, and planning terminology, concepts, and issues
Knowledge of office practices including extensive filing systems and methods for safeguarding official documents
Skill in use, operation, and application of Microsoft Office software, especially the Microsoft Office suite
Skill in use of modern office equipment to produce documents in accordance with established styles and standards
Skill in organizing files and documents for easy accessibility
Ability to express technical information clearly in language that can be understood by the general public
Ability to listen to multi-party discussions of technical information and record essential information
Ability to write accurate and comprehensive minutes summarizing discussion and noting resolutions, decisions, and action items
Ability to take fast, accurate notes
Ability to apply proper English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage to draft, edit, and proofread technical documents
Ability to manage work efficiently to meet recurring and strict deadlines
Ability to research documents and prepare written summary of findings in response to requests for information
