Responsibilities
Performs chlorine level and bacteriological sampling and checks
Performs pumping station checks
Installs water meters and boxes at new construction sites
Removes and replaces broken and inoperative water meters
Performs water meter readings
Handles water line problems and repairs leaking water lines
Locates water lines with an electronic line locator for utility companies
Organizes and maintains the parts inventory
Answers customer questions, resolves complaints and billing disputes
Completes work orders and tracks work with work order software
Shares an on-call shift for after hour customer support, emergency response
Conducts maintenance and groundskeeping at Water Department properties and facilities (treatment plants, master meters, tanks, booster stations, etc.)
Proficient in the operation of the vacuum excavation and boring equipment
Assists with inspecting construction of water infrastructure at times of high demand or in the absence of a Water Services Inspector
Capable of operating GPS equipment for mapping of water appurtenances
Assists with the training of new employees to learn job responsibilities and the Shelby County Water System
Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner
Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver's license
One year of work experience with materials, equipment related to water distribution, treatment or associated utility and construction materials and practices
Must obtain backflow preventer technician certification within one year in this position
Preferred
One year of related construction equipment
A Water Certification by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B
Continued employment may be contingent upon employee obtaining a CDL license within twelve months of employment
