The City of Roanoke is seeking a Combination Inspector II to review building plans and inspect all new construction, additions and alterations of buildings and structures for compliance with City and State codes. The role involves investigating appeals, conducting field inspections, and consulting with architects and engineers.

Responsibilities

Investigates appeals and conducts field inspections to examine special problems and specific complaints
Initiates the issuance of stop work orders and summons to Court; provides testimony of code violations
Takes applications and issues building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits
Inspects quality of materials, methods of construction and existing buildings for hazardous conditions
Examines plans, specifications and materials; makes inspection of building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical system for compliance with current code requirements
Consult with architects, engineers and the general public on technical assistance
Stays abreast of new materials and building methods by attending seminars and lectures as new techniques are introduced

Required

Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with major course work in plumbing, mechanical electrical systems or related field
three to five years related experience and/or training in the installations, repair, maintenance or inspection of building, plumbing/mechanical and electrical systems
4 years related experience in general building construction
Virginia Certification as Combination Inspector 1& 2 Family Dwelling and Combination Inspector General in building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development
Possession of a valid appropriate drivers permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, building plans, specifications and procedure manuals
Ability to prepare reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Benefits

Paid leave is time off from work available for use by an employee upon approval by supervisor.

Retirement: Employees contribute 5% of salary and choose between participating in a traditional defined benefit plan or a hybrid program.
Defined Benefit Pension Plan: Normal retirement after 55th birthday.
Hybrid Program: Provides the characteristics of the traditional pension plan with that of a deferred compensation plan.
Retirement Health Savings Plan: All employees contribute 1% of salary to a 401(h) health savings account.
Deferred Compensation: Employees may voluntarily contribute salary deferred dollars into a City Sponsored 457 Plan.
Flexible Spending Account: Allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars from their pay checks to pay for child care and/or medical and dental expenses not covered by the City's health care or dental plans.
Virginia College Savings Plan: Two plans to choose from at a reduced application fee.
Employee Health Services: The City employee health services provides medical care for employees, retirees, and eligible spouses.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Support services available to assist employees facing life challenges.
Vision Insurance: Paid by the Employee.
Voluntary Benefits: Critical Illness, Accident Insurance and Hospital Indemnity Insurance is offered by The Hartford.
