Pest Controller
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a Pest Controller for the Environmental Management Service at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. The role involves planning and implementing a comprehensive integrated pest management program for the Medical Center and its outlying clinics.

Responsibilities
Provides pest control functions for a wide variety of pests - from small animals - insects - vertebrate - plants and other pests
Executes plans developed by the higher-level pest controller and the Pest Management Officer
Independently determines appropriate pest control measures
Selects - mixes - and applies restricted and general use pesticides necessary for proper treatment
Adheres to applicable Federal and State laws and requirements
Understands the physical characteristics - lifecycles - feeding habits - and potential harborages for pests
Uses biological - chemical - and mechanical products to control pests
Utilizes safe and effective measures during the application process to minimize potential hazards to the environment
Completes required reports and necessary records to meet all regulatory agency requirements
Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
You must possess a current and valid state-issued driver's license
You must have or must be able to obtain licensure in the state of Michigan within 11 months from your start date
You must maintain licensure in the areas listed below: 1. Commercial Core - Required within three (3) Months 2. 7A: General Pest Mgmt. - Required within three (3) Months 3. 7E: Interior Plant Pest Mgmt. - Required within six (6) Months 4. 7G: Domestic Animal Pest Mgmt. - Required within eleven (11) Months
You must have the ability to do the work of a Pest Controller without more than normal supervision
Related experience includes utilizing the advanced principles and procedures of an effective Integrated Pest Management program; identifying and controlling a wide variety of pests; independently determining appropriate pest measures; selecting and mixing approved biological - chemical - and mechanical products to control pests; applying pesticides in accordance with product label directions - handbooks - and regulatory requirements; and storing - handling - and disposing of all pesticides and containers as required by all local - state - and federal regulations
Overall duties require the incumbent to be in good physical condition
Duties require walking - stooping - lifting objects as heavy as 50 pounds - moving objects such as desks - chairs - floors polishing machines and battery-powered scrubbing machines - bending - and remaining on feet for long periods of time
Must be able to use both manual and power tools and equipment such as ultra low dosage hydraulic and hand sprayers - sub slab injectors - dusters - pneumatic roto-hammers - animal traps - and other devices
Work is normally performed in and out of doors where heat and light may not be adequate but be dusty - dirty - greasy - or be infested with pests
Incumbent works in all areas where EMS has responsibilities - including isolation areas - and may be subject to cuts - bruises - punctures - minor shocks - or other injuries normally associated with tasks
Incumbent follows safety rules and regulations in daily work including mixing of solutions - climbing ladders - and operating power equipment and daily tasks
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1)
