Summer Intern: Finance {Internship} (Job ID: 17-2026-03)
The City of Independence is launching its inaugural Undergraduate Internship program for the Summer of 2026, offering opportunities in various departments. The Finance Department is seeking a summer intern to support daily operations related to finance and payroll functions under supervision.

Responsibilities
Support the daily operations of the city's finance and payroll functions under staff supervision
Assist with data entry and verification related to payroll, employee hours, leave balances, and deductions
Help maintain organized and accurate financial and payroll records in accordance with city policies and public records requirements
Observe and assist with the payroll processing cycle, including preparation, review, and reconciliation
Assist staff with basic accounting tasks, such as invoice tracking, accounts payable support, and general ledger review
Help gather and organize documentation for audits, budget reviews, or financial reporting
Assist in preparing spreadsheets, summaries, and reports using standard office software
Respond to routine internal requests or questions related to finance or payroll, with guidance from department staff
Maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive employee and financial information
Learn and follow local, state, and federal regulations related to public finance and payroll
Participate in department meetings, trainings, or professional development activities
Gain exposure to municipal government operations, public accountability, and ethical standards in public service
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Actively enrolled at an accredited institution at the Undergraduate level as either a Junior or Senior in the Fall of 2026 semester and graduating no earlier than December 2026
Enrolled in coursework which is relevant to the Internship opportunity to which they are applying. Applicable majors include Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Management, International Business, Marketing, or a field closely related to this role
A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and have an average of B or above in the relevant field of study
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools including Word, Excel and Outlook is required
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Interns must be able to see, speak, and hear clearly
Interns will be required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms
Interns will be required to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds when necessary
This internship will composed of office/sedentary work
Interns must be capable of working in both an indoor and outdoor environment under standard Ohio weather conditions
Preferred
Relevant work experience in the field of the Internship is preferred
