Responsibilities

Serves as the primary technical advisor to the US Space Force and US Air Force on the operational integrity, inspection, acceptance, maintenance, and modification of the world-unique SOON (AN/FMQ-7) and its replacement when applicable
Serves as the senior technical authority for SOON Centralized Repair Activity (CRA) and coordinator with the Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL). Collaborates closely with the weapon system program office, item and program managers, and PMEL
Provides expert consultation and guidance to determine operational acceptability and safety of the SOON (AN/FMQ7) and its replacement when applicable, and safe practices and procedures to do so. Conducts in-depth analysis and diagnostics to identify root causes of equipment degradation and malfunction and develops corrective actions to restore optimal system performance
Serves as the senior Subject Matter Expert (SME) for technical training, guidance, and mentorship to junior technicians. Conducts and documents comprehensive and structured on-the-job training (OJT) that serves as the primary means of technical instruction for the SOON system, which includes a mastery-based apprenticeship approach

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
This position requires some travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft, to include CONUS and/or overseas, to perform scheduled and unscheduled depot-level maintenance actions
The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required for the position, can be qualified to drive government motor vehicles
Must be able to distinguish colors and shades of colors
Indoor and outdoor work at equipment sites requires frequent walking, kneeling, bending, prolonged standing, working in strained and uncomfortable positions, and lifting/carrying moderate (15-44 lbs.). Outdoor work is sometimes performed in inclement weather or limited light conditions
This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions. IAW, DoDI 3020-42, Defense Continuity Programs
At a minimum, the position must meet the qualification requirements stipulated by the US Office of Personnel Management for the 0801/0808 occupational series
Use of both arms and legs is required. Requires CPR certification. Requires annual occupational exam and the wear of prescribed aural protection device
Requires recurring training to update knowledge of systems and procedures. Requires knowledge of procedures for storage and handling of hazardous materials. Potential exists for injuries such as electric shock, cuts, and bruises, as well as burns caused by electrical or RF energy and soldering equipment
Climbing of towers and ladders while using safety-climbing devices is required. Subject to shift work, overtime, telephone, and pager standby (on-call) and may be required to work an uncommon tour of duty
As a condition of employment, the employee must meet certification requirements found in the RAWS Career Field Education and Training Plan (CFETP). The employee is required to maintain proficiency certification on an annual basis and is subject to validation of training certifications via the Quality Assurance evaluation program
This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employees must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety

Knowledge of wide range of electronic principles and practices, operating parameters, capabilities, and limitations; and of systems and component design, capabilities, configurations, limitations, and functional operation; and of various types of electronics logic with specific knowledge of the SOON (AN/FMQ-7), its subsystems, associated support equipment, and any systems purchased to replace the equipment, component-level repair of the SOON (AN/FMQ-7) and its replacement when applicable
Knowledge of computer operating systems programs, e.g., Unix, Linux, Sun Solaris; network types; network topologies; transport devices (e.g., hubs, routers, switches; and data communications equipment
Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and practices
Skill in using and maintaining trade tools such as drills, wrenches, screwdrivers, levels, wire strippers, compressors, sanders, bearing presses, spherometers, and soldering irons to repair, adjust, or align circuitry and subassemblies, using and maintaining measurement and diagnostic equipment and instruments such as wave, pulse, functional, and signal generators, oscilloscopes, lasers, spectrum analyzers, precision measuring devices, and DC power supplies to perform functional test and alignment of associated telescope equipment
Skill in the interpretation of technical data such as drawings, schematics, blueprints, and specifications of complete electronic systems and sometimes vaguely defined technical information contained in schematics and manufacturer's specifications; in analyzing problems in integrated/interfacing systems involving numerous complex circuits; and in using complex electronic and electromechanical test and measuring equipment using integrated test functions for different purposes
Ability to diagnose and determine needed repairs for malfunctions in electronics systems, to modify standard procedures, adapt equipment or techniques, and make departures from previous approaches to solve technical problems or improve system performance for highly complex electronic systems; to trace electronics logic from one system to another; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships to represent the organization in a professional manner
Ability to use computer terminals to enter and extract data to maintain records and document actions
