Power Grid Engineer

Responsibilities

Conduct research in the topics of power grid modeling and simulation, analysis, planning, operation, monitoring and control, data analytics, power quality, signal processing, resilience, microgrids, HIL lab testing, and field pilots
Present formal and informal overviews of research progress at group meetings
Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internal and external to the Laboratory
Contribute to grant proposals and collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals
Perform other duties as assigned
Support complex research projects with competing priorities and implement advanced research concepts in a multidisciplinary team environment where dedication and deadlines are important to project success
Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in conferences and workshops
Engage directly with sponsors and partners and participate in development of new program business

Required

Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and related experience
Experience with at least one power grid simulation software, such as GridLab-D, CYMDIST, OpenDSS, PowerWorld, PSLFor PSS/E
Experience developing software in languages such as Python, C++, Matlab/Simulink for prototyping power grid algorithms and visualization
Analytical and problem-solving skills necessary to craft creative solutions to independently solve complex problems
Sufficient verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and document work
Ability to travel off-site for conference presentations, and sponsor and customer interaction
Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience in the application and development in in the topics of power grid modeling and simulation, analysis, planning, operation, monitoring and control, data analytics, power quality, signal processing, resilience, microgrids, HIL lab testing, and field pilots
Power grid industry experience in practical power grid infrastructure resilience applications
Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information

Preferred

Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or related field
Power grid industry experience in practical power grid infrastructure resilience applications, with Department of Energy (DOE), and other relevant federal and state government agencies
