Legal and Compliance Intern - Summer Position

Armed Forces Benefit Association is offering a summer internship position for a Legal Intern in their Alexandria, VA office, providing an opportunity to gain experience in legal and compliance matters within the insurance industry. The intern will assist with various tasks including legal research, document review, and supporting the compliance team.

Responsibilities

Assisting departments and internal clients with legal related matters; this may include fact-finding, researching, and writing memos, briefs, or opinions
Researching legal issues and legislative histories, and summarizing the findings
Researching corporate structuring and providing summaries of your analysis or findings
Reviewing, proofreading, and editing documents, forms, and reports
Interacting with colleagues, including individual contributors, managers, and senior leaders to assist with investigations and obtaining relevant information from internal and external sources
Assisting with resolving disputes to include analysis of the facts, identification of applicable law, and recommendations to the responsible attorney
Attending client meetings to learn about active cases or projects
Assisting compliance with filings, research, and projects
Attending meetings, programs, and trainings to incorporate broad learning opportunities beyond the Legal and Compliance team
Performing administrative duties such as filing and/or organizing folders, binders, etc

Required

Currently enrolled in first or second year of an ABA accredited law school
Experience sufficient to work effectively in a professional, office environment
Have completed at least one semester of legal research and writing coursework, earning a grade of B or better
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong attention to detail, including editing skills
Sound judgment, including the ability to ask questions, seek input, and apply feedback/coaching productively
Ability to effectively complete multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Effectively manage time and work schedule to complete projects on time
Ability to understand and apply legal concepts and issues to business situations
Skilled in the use of Lexis-Nexis and other legal research programs
Ability to participate in company programs
Willing to learn contracts, business structures, and compliance matters
Willing to learn knowledge and nuance of the insurance industry
