Engineering Specialist I/Lead Project Inspector/ Halifax District

The State of North Carolina's Department of Transportation is seeking an Engineering Specialist I for the Halifax County District Engineer’s office. This role involves leading project inspections, ensuring compliance with project specifications, and providing technical leadership to inspection teams.

Responsibilities

Overseeing daily field inspection activities, ensuring contractor compliance with project specifications, plans, and contract requirements
Leading and coordinating inspection teams, documenting construction progress, and ensuring work quality, safety, and adherence to all applicable standards
Performing advanced level technical inspection work and survey on large, complex highway and bridge construction projects administered by the NCDOT
Conducting on-site inspection, documentation, material testing, and quantity measurements of construction activities to ensure workmanship, materials, and methods comply with state and federal requirements
Providing technical leadership to lower-level technicians

Required

Associate's degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Effective communication and leadership skills required
Ability to lead a team, mentor, and train others

Preferred

Experience in applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
Computer experience, including office software and drafting software
Knowledge of mathematical functions (such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry)
Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and procedures
Experience in taking notes, collecting field data, and preparing routine reports
