INVESTMENT ACCOUNTANT

The State of Arizona is dedicated to honoring the contributions of public safety employees and is currently seeking an Investment Accountant to join the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). This role involves processing investment transactions, maintaining accounting records, and supporting investment reporting for a $19 billion portfolio.

Responsibilities

Processing investment-related transactions, largely consisting of internal and external cash transfers, by using the custodian bank’s proprietary online platform and/or letters of instruction, in compliance with the established internal procedures, and coordinating with multiple parties (both internal and external) to ensure timely trade execution
Aiding in reconciliation of investment-related activity reflected in internal ledgers vs. custodial records and external fund manager statements to ensure a) appropriate accounting treatment of all transactions and b) the accuracy of the reported investment NAV/valuation; also, documenting, researching, and resolving any discrepancies within reasonable time frames related to fund valuations
Assisting with monthly and quarterly close activities and ad hoc requests involving investment accounting data from internal and external stakeholders (investment consultants, portfolio managers, in-house Legal department, etc.)
Addressing various information requests related to annual audits and CAFR preparation
General data organization and management as it relates to: investment transactions (capital call and distribution notices, fund contributions and redemptions, fee schedules, ILPA templates, etc.)
Investment valuation reporting (including monthly and quarterly fund statements, audited financials, tax forms, etc.) obtained via email, secure access to investment portals, and any other relevant methods
Producing investment accounting reports for internal consumption, such as weekly asset allocation reports and cash forecasts

Required

University degree and interest in continuing education in accounting/finance
Knowledge of key accounting principles, concepts, practices, methods and techniques, GAAP requirements
Policies and procedures related to document management in a regulated private and/or public setting
Familiarity with the various investment structures and instruments, including stocks, bonds, derivatives, as well as hedge funds and private equity, real estate, and private credit partnerships
Skill in financial analysis, cash flow modeling and reconciliation, ability to create and utilize complex spreadsheets in MS Excel
Document management, organizing multiple internal and external sources of data flow
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Ability to complete all assignments, including the most routine/mundane ones, with meticulous attention to detail and strong sense of task ownership
Ability to take initiative to autonomously and proactively research and address errors and inefficiencies, focusing on continuous improvement and taking into consideration the entire investment process
Ability to accept a high degree of responsibility in an environment where mistakes could have significant financial consequences
Ability to communicate openly and proactively about any issues and errors
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks/projects while working in a fast-paced, unstructured, and highly dynamic environment
Ability to exhibit excellent follow-through and teamwork skills, remain motivated and determined when faced with challenging tasks and deadlines
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other departments in the organization as well as across the network of its external partners

Familiarity with alternative investment fund economics, valuation methodologies, and operational due diligence best practices
Hands-on operational experience in the asset management industry (treasury operations, fund accounting, compliance, auditing or similar) strongly desired
