Developed/Dispersed Recreation Intern - Individual Placement
Larimer County Department of Health and Environment is offering an internship position through the Larimer County Conservation Corps, where young adults can engage in meaningful conservation projects. The intern will work with the US Forest Service to maintain and repair recreation sites, ensuring wildlife habitat protection and improving access to forest lands.

Responsibilities
Cleans and maintains developed and dispersed recreation areas (i.e. mowing and grass trimming, repairing fencing, and/or some restroom cleaning), restores impacted areas, and replaces signage as needed
Prepares construction materials, ensures proper tool maintenance, and reports work completed
Plans and implements the logistics of projects associated with recreation site maintenance and reconstruction projects. May perform daily logs, road & trail condition, and prescription surveys
Performs independently or as a leader of a small project crew in infrastructure maintenance
Oversees routine maintenance at dispersed recreation sites including cleanup and naturalizing
Explains regulations concerning recreation sites to volunteers and visitors/recreationists. Inspects assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications
Assists with performing compliance checks and inspections on existing permits under Special-Use authorization. Assists with the enforcement of OHV restrictions, including maintenance and posting of regulatory signs and enforcement of restrictions
Operates and maintains work trucks, chainsaws, and other power tools
May drive long distances each day to get to work site areas
Participates in the development of recreation plan for developed and dispersed recreation sites. Participates in the planning for recreation and wilderness area maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction projects in accordance with program management goals. Recommends specific requirements for use of OHVs and the proposed recreation facilities
Qualification
Required
Must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver's license by date of hire
Preferred
Knowledge of recreation site (i.e. day use/picnic areas, campgrounds, trailheads, etc.) and area survey, maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction objectives, standards, and operational techniques sufficient to plan projects, and implement approved plans
Basic knowledge of data collection to perform analysis methods
Technical knowledge in the uses and limitation of handheld motorized power drilling equipment as they relate to recreation site infrastructure construction/reconstruction
Knowledge of forest resources involved in the development and coordination of route maintenance and infrastructure to ensure access to forest recreation resources
Ability to identify soil type, direct site preparation, and to determine appropriate conservation practices to ensure proper site maintenance and construction
Skill in using construction tools and ability to instruct crews, if necessary, in their proper use in repairing and maintaining recreation sites and routes
Skill in communicating principles and philosophy to the public. Knowledge and ability to monitor management activities
Skill in planning on a day-to-day basis to schedule, carry out and accomplish assignment in an orderly manner
