Willapa Bay Smolt Trapping Technician - Scientific Tech 2 - Non-Perm - 2026-01087
NEOGOV is seeking a Willapa Bay Smolt Trapping Technician to join the Department of Fish and Wildlife. This role involves collecting data on juvenile salmon populations in the Willapa basin to support ecological monitoring efforts.

Responsibilities
Operate juvenile salmon traps
Assists with the installation/removal, operation and maintenance of a 5’ rotary screw trap
Check traps daily, enumerating, and sub-sampling juvenile salmonid catch
Collect and record related biological and environmental data as assigned by supervisor
Use various marking/ tagging techniques
Maintain trap integrity during high flow events and make repairs if damage occurs due to weather, flows, debris or vandalism
Organize and maintain all trap related gear, sampling equipment and data forms
Enter and error check field data into agency database
Maintain data integrity- ensure data entry is complete and accurate
Data entry and QA/QC

Qualification
Required
Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1
Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist
Valid driver's license
Preferred
Six (6) months or more of experience in/with identifying juvenile salmonids by species
Six (6) months or more of experience in/with entering data into computer files and spreadsheets (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Access) software
Six (6) months or more of experience in/with salmon life history and proper fish-handling techniques
Six (6) months or more of experience in/with juvenile salmon trapping techniques
Six (6) months or more of experience in/with fish marking and tagging protocols
Six (6) months or more of experience in/with basic construction and use of hand & power tools
