Extra-Corporeal (ECMO) Support Specialist
Southwest Transplant Alliance is seeking an Extra-Corporeal Support (ECMO) Specialist to manage the daily operations of their organ perfusion program. The role involves utilizing advanced perfusion technologies, monitoring organ status, and collaborating with various departments to maximize organ utilization and improve quality processes.

Responsibilities
Provide detailed organ data to accepting transplant programs including trends in pump parameters, interventions, and troubleshooting any aberrant values to ensure maximal organ utilization
When able, transport donor organs on ex vivo support to the transplant center, collaborating with the implanting surgeon on offloading organ to be flushed and implanted
Collaborate with Materials Management to ensure cost-containment, mission-readiness, and inventory management
Take 24-hour calls to provide perfusion services to assigned organ donors according to operational needs
Perform ex vivo perfusion of organs to optimize the opportunity for organ transplantation
Monitor and adjust circuit settings to maintain clinical parameters as established by protocols
Administer medications as warranted by extracorporeal support status
Assist in organ packaging and labeling as needed by acting as a second verifier of donor information
Perform daily checks of perfusion equipment and compliance logs to ensure mission-readiness
Use extracorporeal life support technology to optimize organ function both pre- and post-operatively
Assist in managing the donor pre-operatively to include volume, medication, and acid-base management (while managing extracorporeal support)
Optimize organ function on ex vivo support by close observation of organ volume, acid base balance, laboratory values and providing pharmacologic intervention as indicated
Assist in situ flushing of organs, as needed
Assist in evaluating new perfusion technologies, researching their viability to increase organ donation, and implanting new processes
Assist in the development and revision of processes related to the perfusion department
Participate in or lead quality improvement (QI)/quality assessment (QA) efforts as directed to determine root cases of process variances and to recommend corrective action as needed to department leadership
Support the Perfusion department by collection of ECS/NRP related data, preparation and presentation of research abstracts, and other documentation
Performs other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the purpose of the role
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in nursing or respiratory therapy is required. A combination of alternative education and experience may be considered in lieu of the formal education requirements
Minimum of 5 years of experience in critical care is required
Current Driver's License is required and maintained with an acceptable driving record as defined by STA policy
Preferred
Experiencing caring for patients or donors on ECMO support is preferred
Experience with organ allocation and procurement is preferred
