Cloud Security Engineer (CUI Enablement)
Marathon TS is seeking a Cloud Security Engineer for a short-term contract focused on implementing and configuring a commercial cloud environment to handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). The role involves hands-on engineering support, ensuring compliance with security requirements, and collaborating with an internal team for guidance and oversight.

Responsibilities
Provide hands-on engineering support to bring a commercial cloud tenant into compliance for CUI data handling
Implement and configure Azure security services, with a strong focus on:
Microsoft Defender XDR
Native Azure security and monitoring capabilities
Assist in the implementation and validation of approximately 1,100 security controls (policy-aligned, not authored)
Configure and validate security logging, monitoring, alerting, and threat detection
Support hardening of cloud resources and subscriptions per provided guidance
Collaborate with internal staff who will:
Define the target architecture
Provide control interpretation and prioritization
Conduct oversight and reviews
Document configuration steps, assumptions, and implementation notes as required
Participate in evening working sessions and handoffs as needed
Qualification
Required
Strong hands-on experience with the Microsoft Azure cloud platform
Proven experience implementing Azure security services, including Microsoft Defender XDR
Experience supporting environments with regulated or compliance-driven requirements (e.g., CUI, NIST-based controls)
Ability to work through large sets of security controls and translate them into technical configurations
Familiarity with Azure subscriptions, resource groups, and RBAC
Security monitoring, logging, and incident response tooling
Comfortable operating as an engineering contributor under established guidance
Ability to work independently during evening hours (4pm–12am EST)
Preferred
Experience supporting CUI, NIST 800-171, or similar frameworks
Familiarity with commercial cloud environments supporting government workloads
Experience working alongside security/compliance teams in implementation roles
Prior experience in short-term, high-intensity engineering engagements
