LTE Restoration and Land Management Specialist I

Dane County Land and Water Resources is seeking a Limited Term Employee (LTE) Restoration and Land Management Specialist I. This role involves completing ecological restoration and land management activities on public lands throughout Dane County, including invasive species removal and monitoring restoration projects.

Responsibilities

Evaluate existing vegetation and site conditions
Conduct invasive species removal through multiple methods including herbicide application, weed whacking/mowing, and chainsaw operation
Serve as a prescribed burn crew member, including preparing units and post-burn mop-up/monitoring
Monitor work through all phases of restoration
Provide project communication through updates, personal contacts, notices and meetings with stakeholders
Maintain work task logs and herbicide use reports
Collect, process/clean, and plant native seed
Work cooperatively with volunteers, WI DNR staff, park groups, adjacent landowners, and local municipalities
Ensure project implementation remains compliant with local, state, and federal regulations
Assist in various wildlife surveys including summer deer observation and waterfowl banding activities
Operate and maintain land management equipment including chainsaws, powered cutters, mowers, UTV/ATVs, sprayers and drip torches

Required

Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age or older
A valid driver's license and a good driving record required
Ability to routinely lift up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted
Ability to do manual labor, including repetitive lifting, bending, reaching, kneeling and squatting
Ability to communicate tactfully with the public and project a positive image
Ability to work well with others in a team and lead groups, when needed
Knowledge in the areas of native plants, vegetation management and restoration techniques
Knowledge of the safe and effective use of herbicides
Ability to read maps and navigate to work locations
Basic knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance including ATVs/UTVs, chainsaws, weed whackers, mowers, and fire equipment such as pumps, engines, and hand tools, light and heavy duty vehicles and trailers, commercial mowers and various hand and power tools
