Responsibilities
Support portfolio company Controllers in improving and standardizing month-end and year-end close processes
Help reduce close timelines while improving accuracy and documentation
Establish consistent close checklists, account reconciliation standards, and review procedures
Assist in standardizing monthly financial reporting packages across portfolio companies
Ensure alignment of chart of accounts structures and reporting formats where appropriate
Improve quality and consistency of balance sheet and income statement reporting
Help design and implement practical internal control frameworks suitable for PE-backed, middle-market businesses
Support documentation of accounting policies and procedures
Assist portfolio companies in preparing for audits, lender reporting, and diligence processes
Advise on accounting system usage, optimization, and process automation
Support ERP and accounting system upgrades or transitions at portfolio companies
Drive improvements in workflows around billing, revenue recognition, payables, and payroll where needed
Support portfolio finance teams during add-on acquisition integrations by helping align: Accounting policies, Reporting structures, Close processes and controls
Assist with post-close clean-up and integration of acquired entities into existing financial structures
Work closely with the COE CFO and Director of FP&A to align accounting outputs with portfolio-level reporting needs
Help define and refine how the Finance Center of Excellence supports portfolio finance teams
Contribute to the development of repeatable playbooks and SOPs for finance and accounting across the portfolio
Qualification
Required
Prior experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller in a private equity–backed or high-growth middle-market company
Background in HVAC, construction, industrial services, or field services is highly desirable
Experience improving accounting processes in decentralized or multi-location organizations
Public accounting foundation (Big 4 or national firm) strongly preferred
Deep knowledge of month-end close and financial statement preparation
Deep knowledge of revenue recognition and job costing (especially in construction/services environments)
Deep knowledge of balance sheet reconciliations and working capital management
Experience with ERP or accounting system implementations or upgrades
Strong documentation and process mindset
Hands-on, detail-oriented, and highly organized
Collaborative partner who can work effectively with portfolio Controllers and CFOs without direct authority
Process-driven with a passion for improving how finance functions operate
Comfortable operating across multiple businesses and adapting to different environments
Remote position supporting multiple portfolio companies
Up to 40% travel to portfolio company locations
