As a Data Engineer on the Payments Platform team, you will manage and optimize existing data infrastructure while designing and building modern data models and pipelines to support advanced analytics and machine learning.

Responsibilities
Maintain, monitor, and optimize our production transactional databases and existing data pipelines
Ensure high availability, performance, and data integrity for critical payment processing and reporting systems
Implement improvements to existing ETL/ELT processes for efficiency and reliability
Troubleshoot data issues and participate in on-call rotation for data platform incidents
Collaborate with analytics, product, and finance teams to understand data requirements
Design and implement scalable, reliable data models that serve both operational and analytical needs
Build robust batch and real-time data pipelines using modern tools (e.g., dbt, Airflow, Kafka, Spark)
Develop our modern data warehouse/lakehouse layer to support advanced analytics and machine learning
Implement data quality frameworks and monitoring to ensure trust in our data products
Contribute to the migration strategy from legacy systems to modern cloud-native data architecture
Establish and promote data engineering best practices, including documentation, testing, and CI/CD
Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies to enhance our data capabilities
Support compliance with data governance, security, and privacy requirements (PCI DSS, SOC 2, GDPR)
Qualification
Required
3+ years as a Data Engineer or in a similar role with production experience
Proven experience managing, optimizing, and troubleshooting existing relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.) in a production environment
Strong SQL expertise and experience with query optimization and performance tuning
Experience designing and building dimensional data models and data warehouses
Hands-on experience with modern data pipeline tools (Airflow, dbt, etc.) and cloud data platforms
Experience with Python for data processing and automation
Understanding of data engineering principles: reliability, scalability, data quality, and testing
Preferred
Experience in fintech, payments, or financial services with understanding of transactional data, compliance, and security considerations
Balanced mindset —you appreciate the need to maintain critical existing systems while strategically building for the future
Strong communicator who can explain technical concepts to stakeholders and translate business needs into data solutions
Proactive problem-solver who identifies technical debt and champions sustainable solutions
Familiarity with PCI DSS compliance or similar regulatory environments is a significant plus
Experience with data migration projects and legacy system modernization
Knowledge of real-time/streaming data architectures
Experience with data governance and metadata management tools
Understanding of machine learning data pipelines
Experience in a startup/scale-up environment wearing multiple hats
