Senior Mechanical Hardware Engineer – Displays
General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of their portfolio and the development of leading-edge displays and interiors. They are seeking a high-performing Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the in-house development of GM display mechanical design, focusing on the mechanical design, development, analysis, and review of display packaging and integration with vehicle interiors.
Responsibilities
Execute mechanical design of displays per program timing, leading to successful launch of the product
Using GM Studio theme (i.e., A-surface) as the guide, design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, PCBA mounts, adhesives, connector interface and fastening, etc
Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stacks
Perform optimum material selection for specific applications within the display and for their interface to the vehicle (IP & Console, for example), using GM best practices and Materials Engineering as a partner in this selection
Create 3D CAD, 2D CAD & lead CAD reviews with stakeholders
Develop analysis and test plan for new design, perform proof of concept tests and analysis
Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and make necessary adjustments to mechanical designs
Work with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electro-mechanical systems
Support root cause analysis and solution development based on virtual and/or physical test results
Build partnerships with functional peers internally within GM and externally at Tier 1 suppliers to align on display design per development cycles
Develop virtualization technologies that help accelerate and de-risk product development
Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers
Drive mechanical design strategy for the enterprise
Solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Qualification
Required
BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree
10+ years of engineering experience in design and development of styled electronics and/or appearance grade injection molding, plating and casting
Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries
Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (NX and Teamcenter are the tools required to execute GM projects), 2D drawings, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and assembly
Strong analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing
Hands-on experience engaging with display manufacturers
Preferred
Master's degree/PhD in Mechanical / Industrial Engineering
Mechanical design of plastics and structural components, PCBA integration with mechanical components, computers, or automotive electronics
Strong understanding of thermal solutions and their application
Knowledge of vibrational and structural analysis
Experience with ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning & tolerancing
