Responsibilities

Develop, research, and execute methods of processing materials unique to extremely high-value isotopic material including casting, alloying, thermal processes, milling, and powder processing
Collaboration on the development of targets for advancing enrichment technologies incorporating best practices related to safety, metal quality, chemistry, and productivity
Broad lab equipment usage including building, commissioning, process development, operations, and maintenance
Perform fabrication and reductions of stable isotopes including transition metals, alkali, lanthanides, and metalloids
Prepare reports, presentations, and operator aids or guidelines on research activities; and represent the organization and sponsors via technical presentations in workshops and conferences
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

Required

PhD Degree, or an MS with 4 of years laboratory experience, or a BS with 5 years of laboratory experience in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or related discipline
Knowledge in metallurgy across a broad range of elements and/or alloys
Hands-on experience with metal fabrication
Excellent attention to detail when working with exotic and expensive materials including meticulous handling and documentation
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the Laboratory
Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer
Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program

Preferred

Experience with metals fabrication including casting, alloying, thermal processes, milling, and powder processing
Experience working with air-reactive metals
Knowledge of powder metallurgy
Knowledge of metal reductions
Experience with lab equipment operation, start-up, and maintenance
Experience with vacuum systems operation and maintenance including vacuum furnaces
