Part-Time Senior Stage Assistant

The City of Palmdale is seeking a Part-Time Senior Stage Assistant to assist in planning and implementing theatrical activities while providing clerical support to professional theatre staff. The role involves a variety of responsibilities including stage setup, technical work, and general clerical duties related to theatre operations.
Government Administration

Responsibilities

Perform a variety of duties related to the planning and implementation of theatrical activities; administer one or more assigned areas of responsibility
Assist with the set-up and safety of the stage and theatre for planned activities
Prepare classrooms for use; set up and take down tables and chairs; assist with youth programs and theatre camps
Assist with general clerical duties including ticket and concession sales, program registration, handling payments, updating/creating documents, and filing
Answer questions from program participants and the public by telephone and in person
Assist in technical work relating to audio, lighting, and stage management such as operating audio or lighting equipment, conducting scene changes during performances, directing performers, and constructing set pieces and props
Ensure all students, performance attendees, and renters conform to the established policies and procedures; maintain backstage procedures
Assist with basic facility maintenance
Maintain adequate supplies and inventory; assist with budgeting for assigned areas of responsibility
Complete technical work relating to audio, lighting, set design and construction, prop and scenery construction, and rigging
Assist with front house and box office work including assisting with concessions
Assist with general clerical duties including updating and creating documents, and filing
Provide technical and training assistance with in-house classes, programming and rentals
Assist in overseeing the use of the facility, insuring patrons conform to established policies and procedures
Assist in researching and preparing creative activities; assist in maintaining records of activities and preparing reports on programs
Attend meetings and provide information regarding programs
Answer detailed questions from program participants and the public by telephone and in person
Assist with basic facility maintenance
Assist with technical projects at other City facilities
Provide guidance and training to volunteers and others working at the theatre

Required

Four years of experience in working in a theatrical environment
Experience working with children or young adults in a recreational environment desirable
Completion of some college courses in a related field is highly desirable
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license may be required by the position
Knowledge of methods, procedures, and practices of theatre operations
Understand basic principles and practices of working effectively with groups or individuals of all ages
Standard office procedures, methods, and computer software applications
Computer software including Publisher and word processing and spreadsheet applications
Principles and objectives of theatrical activities
Principles and practices of coordinating activities
Ability to observe safe work practices
Ability to work efficiently in a busy environment
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision
Ability to resolve minor issues with the public and with staff
Ability to provide technical direction to lower level staff
Ability to sell tickets and balance out the drawer
Ability to supervise and give direction to others

Benefits

The City provides 15 paid holidays per year and 80 hours vacation (years one through four) with a maximum accrual of 240 hours (160 hours for benefited part-time employees).
Employees accrue 96 hours per year with a maximum accrual of 800 hours (400 hours for benefited part-time employees). Unbenefited part-time employees receive 28 hours of paid sick leave per fiscal year.
The City is a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Full-time and benefited part-time employees will be enrolled in either the New Member or Classic plan, as defined by CalPERS.

DIRECT DEPOSIT: Direct Deposit is mandatory for all new employees.

The City offers group health, dental/vision, long term and short term disability, and a $50,000 life insurance policy for full-time employees.
The City participates in the ICMA-RC Deferred Compensation Plan, which enables benefited part-time and full-time employees to contribute on a tax deferred basis.
Overtime is accrued at time-and-a-half for eligible employees for time physically worked in excess of the regular 40-hour work week.
Any employee may be reimbursed for work related mileage at 54 cents per mile when assigned to use their private vehicle on City business.
