Data Architect

University of Utah Health Research is seeking a Data Architect to report to the Technical Team Lead within the Insights Center. The role involves owning core production datasets for reporting and analytics, designing and maintaining data structures, and collaborating with technical teams to enhance data usability and efficiency.

Responsibilities

Asks clarifying questions prior to working with data
Uses structured methodologies to diagnose and solve technical problems
Communicates insights so they can be operationalized effectively by the organization
Builds, refreshes, and maintains production datasets and associated workflows
Automates recurring processes where feasible and monitors dataset reliability/performance
Proactively troubleshoots break-fix issues and ensures continuity of service for analysts
Ensures privacy and protection of data and its responsible use in decision-making
Applies institutional naming standards, definitions, and derivations in shared datasets
Documents data sources, refresh logic, dependencies, and business definitions to enable reuse
Follows data processes related to Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols and PHI
Understands how EHR design decisions impact data capture and downstream availability
Collaborates closely with EDW architects/engineers to leverage existing assets and knowledge
Generates practical approaches to solving ambiguous data problems
Maintains awareness of relevant healthcare and analytics advancements
Works with Solution Analysts and business stakeholders to translate needs into actionable technical work
Reduces bottlenecks by providing reusable datasets, clear definitions, and documentation that enable self-service

Required

Bachelor's degree (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience for Data Architect, II
Bachelor's degree (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience for Data Architect, III
Bachelor's degree (or equivalency) + 8 years of directly related work experience for Data Architect, IV
Master's degree (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience for Data Architect, II
Master's degree (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience for Data Architect, III
Master's degree (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience for Data Architect, IV
Experience in designing, building, and maintaining data structures and refresh processes
Experience in monitoring and troubleshooting datasets
Experience in applying organizational data standards in production datasets
Experience in documenting data sources, refresh logic, dependencies, and business definitions
Experience in collaborating with technical teams to leverage existing data assets
Experience in ensuring privacy and protection of data
Experience in following data processes related to Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols and PHI
Experience in understanding how EHR design decisions impact data capture and downstream availability

Preferred

Familiarity with healthcare systems, terminology, or clinical/operational workflows
