Water Service Technician I

The City of Houston is seeking a Water Service Technician I to join their Utility Billing/Field Collection team. The role involves inspecting, replacing, and repairing water meters to ensure accurate readings and quality service, as well as identifying unsafe conditions and performing routine inspections.

Responsibilities

Reports water consumption by locating, testing and reading water meters to ensure an accurate read
Identifies and reports unsafe conditions, such as damaged or missing meter boxes/lids
Performs routine inspections to inspections to identify and report illegal connections, leaks on mains and conditions of water meters
Learn/know how to read a Key-Map book if your GPS is down
Reports information in the field using electronic devices
Removes dirt/debris from meter boxes to ensure accessibility
Performs on/off tests on 5/8-inch to 2-inch meters
Manually read water meters
Connects and disconnects service using various locks; and
Removes illegal connections
May perform other departmental duties as assigned

Required

Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate
Six (6) months of general maintenance/work experience are required
Valid Texas Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2)

Preferred

Training and experience in corrective and preventive maintenance programs related to water piping, valves, welding, and/or mechanical, ultrasonic and electromagnetic devices used by utilities to measure water consumption
Proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office and Google Maps
