Responsibilities

Serve as expert in material properties and impact on Corning's products and processes
Drive to root cause understanding of technical challenges to improve yield, extend asset life, reduce costs, improve product attributes and enable new products
Develop laboratory testing regimen and process simulations to extend knowledge base and support/disprove hypotheses
Work with laboratory staff to ensure optimal turnaround time and experimental efficiency
Work with external suppliers to identify best material solutions for project application
Share technical findings with colleagues ranging from technical peers to senior level leadership providing information which enables data-based decisions which drive to project success
Maintain high quality engineering principles, including extensive use of statistics, structured problem-solving methods such as KT, DOE, and DMAIC six sigma tools
Document all project findings in internal, structured reports and presentations. Protect Corning's intellectual property by filing invention disclosures for patent application

Required

MS or PhD in Ceramic Engineering or Materials Science Engineering
0-5 years of experience in Ceramic or Materials Engineering role
Deep technical knowledge in ceramic/glass material processing, evaluation and failure mechanism understanding
Laboratory experience, hands on approach to developing and executing experimentation to drive to root cause understanding
Multi-tasking mandatory – balance multiple project responsibilities with different technical focus areas
User of existing literature to facilitate learning - internal and external publications, ASTM standards, journals, conference proceedings, etc
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build successful working relationships with internal business customers, external suppliers and co-workers
High proficiency in written and verbal communication skills; report writing, clear concise PowerPoint presentation skills; comfortable presenting in front of groups ranging from technical peers to senior level leadership

Preferred

Refractory and glass material understanding; microstructure, chemistry, high temperature material interactions, process engineering basics, ceramic forming techniques; dry and wet processing, sintering expertise
Project management tools and approach
Statistical data analysis, utilization of designed of experiments
