Responsibilities
Define test strategies, write and execute detailed test protocols and procedures for customer-relevant performance, safety, reliability, and cost validation
Specify instrumentation, test conditions, pass/fail criteria, and data requirements
Review and interpret test results, identifying trends, risks, and design gaps
Assemble battery cells, modules, and packs for prototype and pilot builds as needed, including fabricating or sourcing fixtures, instrumentation, and test articles required for validation
Identify and resolve assembly, handling, and repeatability challenges during early builds
Collect, analyze, and interpret test data to refine specifications, optimize design assumptions, and lead failure analysis and root-cause investigations
Drive engineering changes informed by empirical data, cell build feedback, and manufacturability insights
Work directly with contract manufacturers on prototype and pilot builds, resolving design and process issues to support design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-cost efforts by evaluating yield, process capability, and cost drivers
Develop build instructions, BOMs, and acceptance criteria to support repeatable prototype builds
Develop, implement, and update performance, lifetime, and cost models based on experimental results
Generate and maintain technical documentation to support prototype-to-product maturation
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field
5+ years of experience in battery systems, energy storage, or related electro-mechanical product development
Demonstrated experience leading NPI from concept through prototype and into early production
Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery performance, safety, and degradation mechanisms
Experience defining and interpreting test plans and validation data using standard battery cycling equipment
Ability to work hands-on with hardware while maintaining system-level engineering ownership
Familiarity with battery standards and compliance testing (UL, IEC, UN38.3, SAE, etc.)
Experience with modeling tools for battery performance, lifetime, or cost (e.g., PyBaMM, AVL or equivalent)
