Responsibilities

Provide guidance, direction, and support in the management of recreational finfish and shellfish fisheries to ensure they are managed for sustainable use of wild stocks, to provide for a diversity of fishing experience, and to optimize social and economic benefits to the state
Coordinate all fishery management activities within Region I, coordinate the activities of seven area management biologists, and take the lead in all regional interactions with the Alaska Board of Fisheries (BOF). This individual will work closely with the access and enhancement coordinator to review access locations, manage enhanced stocks, identify potential new enhancement opportunities, and provide necessary feedback for the Regional Planning Team process
Oversees management of fisheries that are fully allocated and highly contentious among the user groups. Management actions are highly complex due to involvement with international Treaty obligations and federal fishery management plans thus necessitating coordination and collaboration with numerous federal entities (e.g. US/Canada Pacific Salmon Treaty; Pacific Halibut Treaty; Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Conservation Act)

Required

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management
Seven years of professional experience as a fisheries, wildlife, or habitat biologist that includes at least one year as a program manager or technical expert or two years at an advanced professional level
Experience in supervising fisheries biologists and evaluating performance
Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise fisheries management activities for multiple fisheries
Strong writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills
Experience with understanding and synthesizing biological, statistical, and socioeconomic issues involved in natural resource management
A valid driver's license is required
First Aid/CPR Certification
Peace Officer Authorization
