Shipyard Project Manager – Compartment Closeout

Responsibilities

Own assigned compartments from 'work-in-progress' through final closeout and turnover
Plan and manage closeout sequencing in coordination with production schedules
Maintain compartment closeout status, readiness tracking, and punch-list resolution
Approve or reject compartment closeout based on readiness, compliance, and risk
Prevent premature closure of compartments with open work, deficiencies, or documentation gaps
Lead And Conduct Onboard Walkdowns To Verify Completion Of Structural work (welds, penetrations, foundations)
Piping, HVAC, electrical, and outfit installations
Required access, clearances, labeling, and maintainability
Verify drains, bilges, ventilation paths, and access routes are complete and unobstructed
Coordinate corrective actions with trades and supervision to achieve readiness
Manage verification of watertight boundaries, collars, sleeves, doors, hatches, and penetrations
Confirm fire boundaries (as applicable) are installed per drawings and standards
Ensure boundary integrity is achieved prior to insulation or permanent closeout
Coordinate with coatings and preservation teams to confirm surface prep and coatings are complete
Ensure compartments are clean, free of debris, oil, and FOD prior to closeout
Verify equipment protection and preservation are in place before access is lost
Ensure as-built conditions align with drawings and approved work packages
Drive closure of NCRs, RFIs, and ECNs affecting compartment readiness
Complete and approve compartment closeout checklists and turnover documentation
Protect configuration control once compartments are closed and inaccessible
Interface daily with production, engineering, QA, coatings, electrical, piping, and test teams
Communicate readiness status, deficiencies, and risks clearly to supervisors and management
Escalate issues with facts, photos, and documented impacts—not opinion
Support test and trials readiness by ensuring compartments meet integrity and access requirements

Required

Background check, US Citizenship, CAC, and a drug screening are requirements of this job
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Marine, Mechanical, Structural, Electrical) or equivalent shipyard experience
5+ years experience in shipbuilding, vessel construction, or major refit
Proven experience managing deck-plate execution, inspections, or production closeout
Comfortable working onboard vessels in active construction environments
Shipboard compartments and naming conventions
Structural, piping, HVAC, and electrical installation fundamentals
Ability to interpret structural drawings
Ability to interpret P&IDs
Ability to interpret electrical one-lines and cable schedules
Ability to interpret compartment arrangement and system drawings
Familiarity with shipyard quality practices
Understanding of watertight integrity and boundary requirements
Working knowledge of fire boundary concepts
Experience supporting inspections and test readiness (USCG, ABS, Navy, or Owner reps)
Strong attention to detail and follow-through
Confidence to delay or stop closeout when requirements are not met
Ability to prioritize critical closeout items versus deferrable work
Organized, checklist-driven, and disciplined with documentation and tracking
Strong field communication and coordination skills

Prior compartment closeout, production management, QA, or superintendent roles
Experience supporting military or government vessel programs
