Responsibilities

Supervise and monitor one or more tree special crews in their daily activities
Schedule and assign work to staff
Direct and lead workers in completing assigned work
Monitoring work and project activity progress and making necessary changes
Records job site information and checks crew performance and records for accuracy and completeness
Assist in hiring and recruiting
Oversee performance management
Conduct annual performance evaluations and development planning and training
Support assigned project activities; ensure compliance with larger unit goals
Coordinate and facilitate health and safety programs and training like the monthly tailgate safety meetings and document incident reports as required
Track budget for area of responsibility, and provide time and workforce needs and estimates to higher level management based on cost analyses, ensuring work is completed according to stipulated price and agreement
Implement, interpret, and manage policies and procedures pertaining to operations and facilities management as well as assist in the development of policies and procedures
Manage service contracts as applicable and coordinate maintenance and repairs of assigned equipment and vehicles
Coordinate activities, of the horticultural trade, and renovation with Stanford staff, subcontractors, and/or vendors
Manage and facilitate waste disposal program for the tree crew
Assists the manager in determining specific tree care needs and work schedules
Arranges pre-notification of public for work in areas on campus
Assists in determining tree maintenance work, coordinates operations with other University departments on cooperative projects
Inspects trucks, tools and equipment used by the tree crew and grounds maintenance, for safe condition and efficient operation, and coordinates necessary repairs
Other duties as assigned

Required

A combination of education, training and experience performing responsibilities similar to those listed above
Minimum of 5 years in the arboricultural field and experience with managing and leading a tree crew
Must have knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance management
Principles of tree biology
Demonstrate experience in materials, methods, practices and equipment usage in tree maintenance, planting, preservation and pest management activities
Knowledge of principles of budget preparation and expenditure control
Demonstrate experience of types and level of maintenance, planting, preservation and pest management activities generally performed in an urban forestry program
Ability to manage occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work, including line clearance tree pruning
Demonstrate record keeping and reporting procedures, including computerized maintenance systems
Ability to integrated pest management principles and techniques
Knowledge and experience with pesticide application regulations pertaining to pesticide use in the urban forest
Entrepreneurial methods and techniques used in the public sector
Ability to manage contractual services
Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license

Preferred

Experience managing BU employees preferred
Certified arborist preferred. If not certified must commit to obtain certification within 12 months of employment
TRAQ rating preferred
Class A (CDL) license preferred
