Assistant Professor - Data Analytics (9-month, Tenure Track)

Ferris State University College of Business is seeking an Assistant Professor for their Data Analytics program. The role involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Data Science & Analytics and developing curricula for experiential learning across various platforms.

Responsibilities

Teach full-time during the 9-month academic year
Teach a selection of undergraduate and graduate courses in Data Science & Analytics. The candidate should be able to teach an array of the required courses in the Business Data Analytics BS and the MS in Data Science & Analytics programs. The subjects to be taught are Introduction to statistics, inferential statistics, applied linear models, applied statistical methods, calculus, programming, machine learning, visual data analytics, and data mining tools that include association rules, clustering, predictive analytics, text & web mining, and data warehousing and intelligence
Candidates should possess the ability to develop and deliver curricula activities for hands-on experiential learning integrated across multiple platforms (online, mixed delivery, and face-to-face)
Candidate should be able to work independently and collaboratively with effective communication skills, both written and orally. The candidate is encouraged to serve as an advisor for our students in the Data Analytics Association at Ferris
Recruitment of students (including Dawg Days, Admitted Student Days, visits to high schools or career tech centers, and other University-outreach events) will occur throughout the academic year and include some Saturdays
Faculty is expected to engage in assessment of student learning and scholarly/professional development activities to enhance their teaching ability or learn new materials/techniques/software that will be incorporated to improve the teaching skills to benefit the students
Serve on program committees and represent the program(s) on college and university committees
Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development, assessment, and quality assurance
Candidate is expected to teach at the Big Rapids campus
Teach and coordinate elective courses in areas of expertise
Collaborate in design and implementation of additional undergraduate and graduate degrees
Maintain records and conduct assessment and advising in accordance with policies and procedures developed by the university, college, school, department, and/or program
Perform duties in accordance with established University policies
Act as liaison between the program and professional organizations through active, individual involvement and, potentially as the program-appointed representative
Enthusiastically support student success through active involvement with individual students, student organizations, and student competitions, both within and outside of the classroom
Remain current in the profession
The position reports to the Department Chair or Director and the Dean
Cultivates an environment of belonging that values, respects, supports, and celebrates individual similarities and differences, allowing students, faculty, and staff to thrive authentically
Support, promote, and develop University student enrollment and retention initiatives

Work with colleagues to develop new curricular initiatives
Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include advising students, orientation and registration of students, participation in university committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (ex. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time)
Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment

Required

Ph.D. or Ph.D. candidate graduating prior to January 1, 2027 with a Ph.D. in statistics, applied statistics, data mining, data analytics, business data analytics, data science, or a closely related field
Experience in teaching statistics, data mining, data analytics, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a related field in face-to-face, mixed delivery, or online environments at a college/university level
Industry, consulting, or research experience in statistics, data mining, data analytics, data science, and/or big data
Demonstrated research and publication background
Ability to develop and deliver curricula activities for hands-on experiential learning integrated across multiple platforms (online, mixed delivery, and face-to-face)
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with effective communication skills, both written and orally
Ability to teach a selection of undergraduate and graduate courses in Data Science & Analytics
Ability to maintain records and conduct assessment and advising in accordance with policies and procedures developed by the university, college, school, department, and/or program
Ability to enthusiastically support student success through active involvement with individual students, student organizations, and student competitions, both within and outside of the classroom
Ability to remain current in the profession
Excellent communication skills
Demonstrated successful experience working directly with people from diverse backgrounds, including cultural, educational, socioeconomic and life experiences
Excel – Statistical functions & pivot table
IBM-SPSS Modeler, SAS Enterprise Miner, and/or other software used in data mining/analytics
IBM-SPSS Statistics, SAS, and/or Minitab
SQL, Tableau, and Power BI
Programming: R, Python, and/or SAS for Statistics
