Responsibilities
Perform tasks on dumpsters and other metal products based on samples and sketches, including but not limited to, maintenance, repair, paint, fabrication, weld, remodeling, and construction
Refurbish dumpsters including but not limited to preparing, scraping, and repainting entire dumpster, installing new lids, and numbers and sticker to make ready for customer
Weld metal components to fabricate equipment or structures according to layouts, blueprints or work orders using arc and gas welders, acetylene oxygen welding equipment, MIG (metallic inert gas) welder, portable magnetic drill press or cutting torch
Ensure welding results in strong penetrated welds that are smooth, non-porous, and consistent
Inspect equipment before and after use and perform minor maintenance as needed; report issues not able to be resolved immediately to supervisor
Clean and maintain an orderly work area and monitor welding supply inventory; request additional supplies to ensure necessary supplies are available when needed
Perform minor maintenance on trash compactors, repairing hydraulic hoses, hydraulic fittings, and changing hydraulic fluids, as needed
Safely drive solid waste collection vehicle over assigned routes to and from the sanitary landfill through busy City of Denton streets and neighborhoods; must pay close attention to other vehicles, pedestrians, team members, parked vehicles, and overhead obstructions
Operate side-loading or front-loading lift mechanism to empty commercial dumpsters into collection vehicles or operates hydraulic lift for loading/unloading roll-off containers onto roll-off vehicle as needed
Load and unload solid waste, recyclables and other items collected with hydraulic controls
Track and report solid waste ordinance violations to supervision and customer service
Perform daily Pre-Trip and Post-Trip inspection and maintenance checks of all equipment; report any issues immediate to leader
Perform delivery, in-field maintenance, and inventory tracking of containers
Assist customers regarding service problems and concerns; report information obtained, and any resolution completed to leader
Assist operators in understanding the best and safest operation methods; notify leadership immediately of any and all unsafe behavior or actions
Qualification
Required
High School diploma or equivalent
Four (4) years' experience in the operation of rear tandem axle trucks over 30,000 GVW or a variety of multiple types of heavy equipment
Two (2) years' experience welder fabricator experience
Must have and maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Air Brake endorsement and a good driving record prior to employment
Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures
Knowledge of methods, procedures, tools, materials, and equipment used in welding metal structures and materials
Knowledge of general repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment, including trash compactors and electric/hydraulic power units
Knowledge of maintenance and appropriate usage of tools and equipment, per department/division
Skill at the beginner level, working with Microsoft Office 365, mobile devices, and other software systems to complete work
Skill in identifying problems and implement solutions
Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers
Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and in written forms, speak publicly, and listen intently to other points of view
Ability to work independently to manage multiple work tasks while balancing competing priorities with attention to detail and in a fast-paced environment
Ability to safely drive, back, and operate heavy equipment on busy city streets and through neighborhoods
Ability to operate the onboard GPS unit and read a map to navigate the City of Denton
Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and confidentiality
Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships
Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience
Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing work environment to facilitate/accomplish needed activities
Ability to document all adjustments necessary and approved to complete the project
Ability to read, understand, and follow safety protocols and safe work procedures
Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification
Must pass a physical examination
Must pass an equipment proficiency test
Must attend and successfully complete the City's Defensive Driving Course (DDC) as soon as possible after employment (if required to drive City vehicle or personal vehicle for City business)
