Equipment and Warehouse Maintainer

Responsibilities
Pick-up materials and deliver from any location on or off-campus, ensuring correct and timely delivery of materials as directed. This includes, but is not limited to inventory, books, publications, packages, equipment for event support, furniture, office supplies, mail and any other materials and/or equipment
Repair, service, order parts and maintain inventory for all maintenance equipment such as: vacuum cleaners, auto scrubbers, pool vacuums, carpet extractors and any other equipment associated with building services
Construct and repair canvas tents and tarps. Sew college flags or other material as requested
Provide material support, including but not limited to traveling to various stores to retrieve stock and deliver for Facilities Management storeroom, various trades and building services as directed
Maintain positive customer service relations with all members of the college community, including students, faculty, staff, guests and community at large
Search for and implement ways to improve efficiency regarding delivery schedules, transportation, pick-up and return of materials
Responsible for keeping material handling equipment in good working order, reporting broken equipment via work order system for repair
Responsible for keeping track of trucking and CER work orders online, including changing status in system. Must run completion deadline reports and general reports utilizing the work order system
Work with other departments to keep warehoused publications neat and stocked, deliver as requested
Responsible for keeping the loading dock area and storeroom in a safe, clean, orderly manner which includes, but not limited to cleaning floors, shelves, tables, replacing light bulbs, removing trash, recycling boxes, etc
Unload materials/supplies, verify packing slips, label items, identify discrepancies, and report them to inventory services specialist/manager as requested
Issue stock as requested by facilities personnel
Demonstrate resourcefulness in adopting inventory handling methods and providing solutions to problems presented. Assist with conducting cyclic, special and other inventories of bin and bulk stock
Alert inventory services specialist when standard supply of stock runs low
Maintain sign inventory and deliver as requested
Provide backup and assistance to other facilities services staff including truckers and event staff, following established protocols as assigned
Observe OSHA safety regulations and practices at all times and participate in required safety programs
Remove ice and snow and perform sanding as assigned
Attend meetings and training opportunities, when requested
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
High school/vocational diploma, GED equivalent or combination of education and experience
Minimum of two years' experience driving a box truck and delivering materials, required
Minimum of one-year experience performing storeroom functions or knowledge of receipt, storage and distribution of materials and supplies needed in an inventory management setting
Minimum of 3 years' recent experience in small motor repair and maintenance
Must have a valid driver's license. Must complete and comply with all college driving credentialing requirements and obtain DOT certificate. Upon award of this position, a Division of Motor Vehicles background check will be completed
Must possess the knowledge of fundamental mechanics and be familiar with the basic principles of electronics in order to recognize and repair potential problems with the equipment. Must be able to read and understand service manuals for detailed directions while performing repairs. Be familiar with testing devices to assist with the location of faulty parts
Must be able to safely bend, lift, stoop, carry and move materials up to fifty pounds regularly and up to ninety pounds occasionally. Must be able to safely load and operate loaded hand truck or dollies
Must demonstrate strong working knowledge in Microsoft Office, database systems, Smith College email, finance/payroll and calendar systems and the work order system as well as accessing the internet
Must be able to pass a background check
Candidate shall not have a history of moving vehicle violations or traffic accidents
Must be capable of safely and efficiently operating the college's motor vehicles
Responsible for cleaning vehicles, inspecting for damage and performing visual check prior to using. Reporting any issues discovered to the supervisor immediately
Must possess the ability to carry out oral and written instructions
Ability to use good judgment to take appropriate independent action to carry out the primary functions of the job
Must have or obtain a valid Forklift training certificate
Must possess the knowledge to safely operate gas and electric Forklift machines, pallet jack movers, hand trucks and other material handling equipment to move items weighing hundreds of pounds
Must have knowledge of OSHA regulations for the safety of the college employees, its users and properties
Must demonstrate ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Must be able to safely move and climb ladders, while holding stock and be able to stand/walk on unforgiving surfaces for long periods of time
Must be able to walk long distances and safely climb stairs, while delivering stock
Ability to remove ice and snow from entrances, walkways, ramps, fire escapes, porches and emergency exits attached or leading to buildings, which includes shoveling, scraping and sanding
Ability to safely move, deliver (truck) and arrange heavy items such as equipment, furniture, fixtures and materials within and between buildings for students, faculty, staff and guests of the college
Must have ability to operate power tools including but not limited to drills, grinders, soldering irons, heat guns, etc
