Field Boiler Performance & Inspection Engineer
Advantage Technical is seeking a skilled Boiler Inspection & Tuning Engineer to join their Technical Services team. This role involves performing field-based inspections, performance testing, and tuning of industrial boilers and HRSG systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Responsibilities
Conduct detailed inspections of boilers, HRSG units, and auxiliary systems, including visual, mechanical, ultrasonic thickness, and borescope evaluations
Perform boiler performance testing and combustion tuning to optimize efficiency, emissions compliance, and system reliability
Analyze operational data such as NOₓ, CO, O₂, steam flow, pressures, and temperatures to identify performance gaps and recommend corrective actions
Document inspection findings and prepare comprehensive technical reports with clear recommendations for repairs, upgrades, or tuning adjustments
Support on-site troubleshooting of combustion, mechanical, and performance-related issues
Participate in outage planning and execution, ensuring accurate scope definition and inspection coverage
Ensure all field activities comply with safety standards, company procedures, and applicable industry codes
Collaborate with internal engineering teams and customers to communicate results, propose solutions, and support implementation
Travel to domestic sites (50–70%), with optional international travel
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience)
Minimum of 3 years of experience in boiler or HRSG inspection and performance tuning
Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer principles
Familiarity with combustion systems, burner management systems, and emissions compliance testing
Proficiency in inspection methods including visual inspection, ultrasonic thickness testing, and borescope evaluations
Strong technical writing and reporting skills
Ability to work safely in industrial environments, including confined spaces and elevated structures
Willingness to travel extensively and perform hands-on field work
Preferred
Experience in power generation, utility, or heavy industrial boiler environments
Working knowledge of industry standards such as ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, NBIC, and ASME PTC
Hands-on experience with tuning software, field instrumentation, and portable emissions analyzers
Prior field service, OEM, or third-party inspection experience
