Training Coordinator
City of Newport News is responsible for managing the Department's training program. The Training Coordinator will develop, coordinate, and conduct training curriculum, assess training needs, ensure compliance with mandatory standards, and support recruitment efforts for the department.

Responsibilities
Develops, coordinates, and conducts training curriculum based on training needs to include regulatory, professional, leadership and skill development programs for departmental employees
Conducts training assessments and surveys to measure training program effectiveness
Researches state and federal laws and regulations for changes or updates to employer-mandated training requirements
Ensures that state mandated training is scheduled and completed as required; disseminates training information as needed
Supports recruitment efforts for the department
Maintains, collects and updates various training materials including multi-media
Maintains a training database to monitor and document training and attendance; produces statistical reports as requested
Recommends improvements to training and tracking systems
Assists with training budget preparation and monitoring, purchasing and financial transactions, payroll, selection processes, career counseling, human resources responsibilities, prioritizing and assigning work and related activities
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods of adult education and training to include methods for developing training outlines and employee development programs
Knowledge of group dynamics and team building as applied to group training
General knowledge of human resources recruitment and selection processes, and utilization of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system
Knowledge of payroll methods, practices, and terminology to ensure accuracy and appropriateness of all transactions and compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and applicable labor laws
Considerable knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
Utilizes a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet, and related software to effectively complete a variety of administrative tasks with reasonable speed and accuracy
Uses logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate complex situations and research information to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to the training needs identified
Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees and all levels of management to include representatives from other departments and organizations
Ability to plan and organize daily work routine
Estimates expected time of completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly
Implements work activities in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules
Excellent ability to communicate ideas and proposals effectively to diverse audiences to include preparing and conducting training, preparation of reports, and policies
Excellent ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented verbally and in writing
Ability to handle a variety of issues with tact and diplomacy and in a confidential manner
Ability to perform arithmetic, algebraic, and statistical applications to perform basic statistics, budgeting, purchasing and financial calculations
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Human Resources, Psychology, Adult Education or a related field
Requires 3 - 5 years of experience working in a training and/or human resources environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
Requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work
Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds)
Tasks may involve extended periods of time at keyboard or workstation
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals
Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally
Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions
