CONSERVATIONIST I

Caltrans District 3 is part of the California Conservation Corps, which focuses on developing young adults through public service and conservation-related work. The Conservationist I will supervise and mentor young adults on various conservation projects, ensuring their safety and development while fostering teamwork and productivity.
Government Administration

Responsibilities

Supervise, mentor, train, and evaluate 18–25-year-old young adults (Corpsmembers) performing conservation-related work projects
Instruct, inspire, motivate, and ensure the development of safe work habits in crews of Corpsmembers
Supervise Corpsmembers while involved in projects in remote areas or urban settings
Respond to natural disasters such as floods, fires, or pest infestations
Assist in the further educational development of Corpsmembers during evening and weekends, if assigned
Maintain time and leave records; develop injury, accomplishment, and disciplinary reports
Teach Corpsmembers the importance of work productivity, teamwork, safe work habits, and discipline on work projects; responsible for following CCC-established discipline policies and holding Corpsmembers accountable for their behavior
Recommend corrective action when necessary
Evaluate Corpsmembers’ performance
Instruct Corpsmembers in the protection and conservation of California’s natural resources
Instruct Corpsmembers in skills such as construction, landscaping, erosion control, and trail building and maintenance
Develop Corpsmembers’ leadership skills
Recommend Corpsmembers as candidates for the CCC Leadership Training Program
Mentor Corpsmember leaders; supervision of Corpsmembers during non-work hours (night and weekend supervision, if assigned)
Monitor and ensure the health and safety of all Corpsmembers on CCC facilities
Provide informal counseling to Corpsmembers; refer to formal counseling, if needed
Provide feedback and evaluation to Corpsmembers
Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operation; recommend repairs and maintenance
Drive and operate state vehicles and equipment, perform minor repairs and maintenance
Identify, select and train Corpsmember drivers
Assist in their attainment of a Class B license and CCC-sponsored driver training course(s); develop supervisor’s reports of accidents and injuries, disciplinary reports, and weekly project and safety reports; document on-the-job training and conservation awareness activities

Required

Commercial Driver License – Provide evidence that a Commercial Class C license with a Passenger Transport Vehicle special endorsement, or equivalent, has been obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
Pre-employment Drug Test – Pass a urine drug test. In accordance with the Federal Highway Administration regulations (49 CFR, Part 382), persons hired to a class requiring a commercial driver license must take and pass a pre-employment drug test
Background Investigation – Undergo fingerprinting and successfully pass a Criminal Offender Record Information check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) which may or may not also include a background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)
Medical Exam – a medical clearance examination is required for this classification

Preferred

Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to work effectively with others as part of a team
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely fashion
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and diplomacy on the job
Ability to work well in high-pressure situations
Knowledge of youth development principles and practices
Knowledge of the Conservation Corps is preferred
