Senior Research Manager
Michigan Medicine is one of the largest health care complexes in the world, and they are seeking a Senior Healthcare Manager to provide strategic leadership for a research lab specializing in bipolar disorder studies. This role includes overseeing program development, operational management, and fiscal oversight to ensure the achievement of program goals.

Responsibilities
Provide leadership and professional expertise across all lab operations, leveraging team skills to accomplish complex objectives
Develop, recommend, and implement operational and strategic initiatives in line with the program?s research, clinical, and administrative goals
Consult with top senior leadership to set long-range objectives and contribute to broad strategy and vision
Make decisions that significantly impact program effectiveness, service excellence, and achievement of research goals
Manage a team of subordinate managers, clinicians, research coordinators, professional staff and student learners, ensuring permanent/ongoing direction of the program
Oversee human resource management: recruitment, hiring, onboarding, promotion, salary adjustments, performance appraisals, coaching, disciplinary actions, and professional development
Ensure equitable and consistent application of university policies to foster a positive and engaged work environment
Empower staff through mentorship and the development of effective teams to maximize productivity
Plan, direct, and manage program workflows and resource allocation for daily research and clinical operations
Oversee regulatory compliance, including institutional review board (IRB) protocols and Government/FDA standards
Implement protocols to ensure high data quality, participant safety, and operational integrity across all studies
Monitor and refine business processes for efficiency, innovation, and alignment with best practices
Develop, administer, and monitor program budgets
Collaborate with financial officers in monthly reviews, audit preparation, and expense reconciliation
Provide recommendations that impact budgetary planning, cost control, and effective resource use
Represent the lab in communications with donors, development offices, university administration, and external partners
Support public relations, marketing, and communications efforts to promote lab initiatives and foster community outreach
Make recommendations, deliver work results, and provide decision support that shape program direction, research success, and customer service excellence
Ensure compliance with university policies, FLSA regulations, and applicable laws; maintain standards for exempt positions (salary level, basis, and duties)
Resolve conflicts, and maintain a positive organizational culture
Contribute to the broader success of the Department of Psychiatry and the University of Michigan through participation in cross-functional initiatives as needed
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's in Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Business Administration, Social Work, or related discipline
Significant professional experience in mental health research management
Strong prior management, supervisory, or team leadership experience, ideally within a large and growing academic, clinical, or research environment
Thorough understanding of university operations, healthcare policies, and regulatory compliance
Proven impact on operational effectiveness, goal attainment, and service improvement
Preferred
Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Business Administration, Social Work, or related discipline
Knowledge of bipolar disorder preferred
