Responsibilities
Provide strategic direction and operational oversight for UT Austin's academic technology ecosystem, ensuring technology serves pedagogy and advances teaching excellence
Canvas learning management system operations serving 50,000+ students and faculty
Instructional technology and faculty engagement programs
Educational technology support and training
Teaching with technology community building and innovation
Institutional leadership for accessible course design and content
Universal design for learning principles and practice
Faculty support for accessibility compliance and inclusive pedagogy
Accessibility integration across learning environments and technologies
Technology strategy for formal and informal learning spaces across campus
Active learning environment design and pedagogical support
Integration of classroom technology with learning platforms and AI tools
Partnership with the Office of the Provost, all Colleges and Schools, as well as Facilities and Planning on learning space modernization
Create a sustainable funding model that supports world-class learning spaces at scale
Lead institutional efforts to build digital fluency across the campus community, ensuring faculty and staff can effectively leverage enterprise technology platforms to advance teaching, learning, and operations
Drive campus-wide fluency with Microsoft 365 tools including Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and productivity applications
Expand faculty capabilities in learning management system use, course design, and pedagogical innovation
Partner with AI Studio to drive faculty and staff adoption of UT Sage, M365 Copilot, and other AI tools
Ensure faculty can effectively utilize classroom technology and active learning environments
Develop and execute comprehensive digital adoption strategies aligned with institutional priorities
Design and deliver training programs, workshops, and just-in-time learning resources
Build faculty and staff champion networks to accelerate peer-to-peer adoption
Measure and report adoption metrics, satisfaction, and institutional impact
Create communities of practice around technology-enabled teaching and operations
Lead change management strategies for new technology rollouts and platform migrations
Build trusted relationships with faculty governance, academic departments, and administrative units
Gather feedback from campus community to inform technology strategy and platform development
Ensure adoption efforts address equity, accessibility, and diverse learner needs
Lead 2–3 major institutional transformation programs requiring executive sponsorship, cross-functional coordination, and strategic stakeholder engagement
Work with the AI Studio to identify use cases where AI can enhance learning outcomes and create faculty adoption pathways
Gather faculty feedback on AI capabilities and inform AI Studio platform development priorities
Work with the AI Studio to build faculty champion networks for AI adoption across colleges and schools
Build and maintain executive-level partnerships that position Enterprise Technology as an essential academic partner, not just a service provider
Expand faculty-facing programs, symposia, and peer learning networks
Build faculty champion networks for teaching with technology and AI adoption
Establish recognition programs for excellence in technology-enabled teaching
Integrate AI platforms with instructional design and learning space strategy
Qualification
Required
15+ years of progressive IT leadership in higher education; 7+ years in senior roles
Deep experience leading academic technology operations (LMS, instructional design, faculty engagement)
Proven success building and scaling academic technology teams and programs
Track record of creating faculty engagement programs that drive technology adoption
Demonstrated success leading enterprise-wide technology adoption programs
Experience building digital dexterity and technology fluency across diverse populations
Track record developing training programs, workshops, and change management strategies
Experience managing complex, multi-year initiatives spanning organizational boundaries
Comfort with ambiguity—ability to lead initiatives without predefined structures
Experience translating emerging technologies into faculty adoption programs (not building the technology)
Working knowledge of generative AI tools and their educational applications
Understanding of responsible AI principles, bias mitigation, and ethical AI use in academic contexts
Demonstrated ability to facilitate cross-functional partnerships between technical and academic teams
Track record of leading faculty development on new technologies
Exceptional ability to build trust and collaborative relationships with faculty and academic leaders
Experience in creating effective partnerships at Provost, Dean, and executive levels
Proven success navigating complex political environments and building stakeholder coalitions
U.S. Citizen, resident, or officially recognized asylee - Applicant selected will be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position
Preferred
Experience as an Associate Vice President, Deputy CIO, or equivalent senior leadership role
Master's degree or higher (MBA, MPA, or advanced degree in instructional design or educational technology valued)
Background in instructional design or educational technology
Experience with accessibility leadership and universal design principles
Knowledge of learning space design and pedagogy-space integration
Active engagement in higher education technology communities (EDUCAUSE, peer networks)
Familiarity with AI platforms and their application to teaching and learning
